Final Round: Reborn Meaning October 19 - November 22, 2005

Welcome to final round of the Splendid Performance competition. Round 5: Reborn Meaning.

The final round's theme is up a notch from the rest of the contest. Reborn meaning pitches the challenge to remix a piece to have a new feeling and present a new meaning to the listener. For example, taking a love song and making it into some rockin' battle music, or a turning a town's theme into a dramatic action score. Highly abstract in nature, it's your job as the artist to bring new meaning to the piece, and how well this meaning come across will determine your theme score.

Also, to put heavier importance on the thematic element of this round, the scoring rubric is being slightly modified.

  • Theme (15%) - The category ensures that the composition follows the theme of particuluar round of the contest. In this round, how well your new theme comes across in the ears and mind of the listener is what you are scored on.
  • Remix (30%) - The category encompasses how well the remix represents the original work(s). The piece should be strong enough that someone familiar with the original work recognizes the source material, but that it also strong enough to stand alone from the original.
  • Creativity (40%) - This category is a critique of the artists compositional decisions in the songs creation. What has been added to really breath life into the song? Does the song flow solidly from section to section, and stay fresh without becoming repetitive? Is this song enjoyable to listen?
  • Production (15%) - This category encompasses the technical qualities of the sound, including the quality of samples used, of any recording done, and of mixing and panning.

Lastly, the final round will see 4 judges, with the lowest judge's score to be removed. This should help with prevent any single score from skewing the results. Also, it allows for more judges input. With that said, good luck to all the finalists. Feel free to email redbeastmage@rpgamer.com with any questions you have.

And the results are in! In what could only be compared to a photo finish, Rexy pulls out on top with her piece Zelda's Nightmare. While it might have been Zelda's Nightmare, it was nothing but a sweet dream for the ears of all the judges. Coming in at runner up, we have not one but two pieces tied for the mark. Bladitor's Zanarky and Darangen's A Hearts Resolve both take home the 2nd place trophy, and will both be receiving the runner up prize.

Amazing work done by all, especially our winners. I thank everyone who competed in this and all other rounds of the competition, and made it out to be as successful as it was. I also thank all my judges who came in to step up to the challenge of judging such amazing work. Make sure to stay tuned to Sound Test for more exciting music in the future.
