Round 2: Mitsuda's Crazy 88s Updated: 07.03.07
May 23, 2007 12:01 AM PDT - June 26, 2007 6:00 PM PDT
Theme: Yasunori Mitsuda
Instrumentation: Solo Piano or Piano Four Hands

Your assignment for Round 2 is to compose a remix that uses music from an RPG composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. To earn a total of 10 Points for Theme, one must simply use one of his themes (a freebie!). One must compose for solo piano or piano four hands.

Off the top of my head, Mitsuda has composed: A majority of Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenosaga I, Shadow Hearts and of course, Xenogears. That should be more than enough music to play around with this round.

Judges for round 2 will be myself, Matthew 'Barieuph' Russo, our resident Previewer Majed 'lost_keeper' Athab, and everyone's favorite media specialist Steve 'shroudie' Ardo.

The round has come to a close! Thanks to all who entered. The winner is Virtuoso with Breath of the Ocean. Virtuoso will get yet another invite to the final round, along with Fermat's Last Theorem. Right now it's looking like they'll be the only ones competing in the Final Round, so interested parties better step it up! Special thanks goes to Alex Martinez for his mix. Thanks to my lost_keeper and shroudie for judging this round. Be sure to enter Round 3!

Entries for round 2 are no longer being accepted.

Score Breakdown

Theme (10%) - This score represents how well the submission adheres to the theme of the Audition Phase. Those failing to submit materials that represent the theme will be scored a 0. Although these would appear to be a cut and dry score, there can be some gray area, and remixers are warned to be very specific and exact with their remixes.

Remix (35%) - The category encompasses how well the remix represents the original work(s). The piece should be strong enough that someone familiar with the original work recognizes the source material, but that it also strong enough to stand alone from the original.

Creativity (45%) - This category is a critique of the artist's compositional decisions in the songs creation. What has been added to really breathe life into the remix? Does the piece flow solidly from section to section, and stay fresh without becoming repetitive? Is listening to this song enjoyable?

Production (10%) - This category encompasses the technical qualities of the sound, including the quality of samples used, of any recording done, and of mixing and panning.
