Furious Prophecy
Francis "Fermat's Last Theorem" Gayon Final Fantasy XI | Sarutabaruta
Author's Comments

Composed for Adriaan "omegabyte" den Ouden, Furious Prophecy is, without a doubt, the most massive remix I had ever composed with almost 70 pages of orchestral score. The piece draws upon Sarutabaruta (which means "the land of prophecy" in the ancient Tarutaru language) for inspiration and the new energized character drove me to name the piece as such. This piece utilizes the sonata form, making this the most classical output in quite a while.

Composed for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba, timpani, cymbals, and strings using Sibelius 5 and rendered by Kouen using SONAR 7 Producer Edition.

My group just shifted out of otorhinolaryngology, or ENT as most people call it, and I witnessed quite a few interesting cases. We had this guy whose right cheek was separated from the rest of his skull because of a vehicular accident. We used the coronal approach, i.e. we literally "peeled" his face off his skull, fixed the fragment with titanium plates, and slapped it right back on. It was awesome. I have to admit, the specialty got bumped higher in my list, but still not way up there. The snot and phlegm are definitely impediments. You could shower me with blood, and I wouldn't care, but nasopharyngeal secretions? No thanks.

Round 4: Vox Populi has reached the two-week mark. As of yet, there are still no submissions, though it's still pretty early. I hope the turnout won't be as disastrous as the previous round. I really miss the thrill that a remixer face-off induces. Anyway, submission period ends in a couple of weeks, so pick up the pace, remixers. Remember, this is the last qualifying round, so it's the last chance to have a shot at the finals, the title of Resident Remixer, and that really awesome Echoes of War album.

We feature today an offering for Adriaan "omegabyte" den Ouden that was finished a few months ago. It is an orchestral piece in sonata form and utilizes a sped up and energized Sarutabaruta theme. It follows the standard form, i.e. exposition, development, and recapitulation. Instead of being strict with the "second theme," which also came from Sarutabaruta, having a key a fifth higher, I kept the original piece's E-flat. After a truncated repeat, the development proceeds, mostly utilizing minor keys. The recapitulation takes place after and following the rule that the second theme is played in the tonic key, there is a sudden and very noticable key shift a third higher in the segment immediately prior. A brief coda then leads the piece into a crescendo conclusion which utilizes the rhythmic pattern that the flute used in the very first segment of the first theme. It's quite long and classical in style, but I do hope you guys like it, nonetheless. Go on, try it out!

Now, then, I'll make the most of the free weekend and play Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, as advised by my fellow staff members. Have a great weekend, guys!
