I had decided to work with The Federation of Windurst some time ago (as soon as I heard the track from the piano collection) and decided to go for a waltz for woodwinds. Why a waltz for woodwinds, you wonder? I just thought that the alliteration was catchy. That's all, really. I actually mentioned in SPOILER ALERT! that "I compose for the most inane reasons." Overall, the piece is quite lively (and riddled with trills). The first part of the piece is fiercely repetitive and insistent—a characteristic of the first part of the original track from the OST. I tried to break it up a little by introducing an original theme (upon the same chords) at around 1:20. I also mixed up the order of parts a little, e.g. an early segment of The Federation of Windurst appears quite late at 3:33 (embedded within a modified version of the second Vana'diel March that I added for some flavor) while a relatively late part appears early on at 0:57. The piece ends with the first two notes of the main theme. Composed using Sibelius 4 for two flutes, an oboe, three clarinets, and a bassoon. Graciously rendered by Kouen using SONAR 6 Producer Edition.

Welcome, one and all, to another episode of Sound Test. This week, I shall be featuring one of my own compositions. I have to admit, "quite lively" may actually be a bit of an understatement to describe this one. I made one of my friends listen to it and he said that "it's so sickeningly sweet and happy that [my friend] can picture Little Red Riding Hood skipping across a field of flowers while holding a basket." Uhuh... I actually don't recall if I thanked him or not for that comment (or if I "accidentally" deleted his progress notes for one of his patients). Anyway, give it a try. It may be to your liking.
The past two weeks has been quite interesting. The number of patients in the Medical ICU is significantly less, but since we students usually handle only a single case at a time, the senior physicians expect you to be very knowledgeable about your case, usually up to the tiniest details. I've actually only handled one patient during the entirety of my two-week-stay—an AML (acute myelogenous leukemia) patient with atypical pneumonia, oral candidiasis, and pericardial effusion. Again, what is it with malignancies and me? And why the hematologic ones? Those are the most difficult ones to read about!
On another note, I'm very psyched because me and my friend's entry got chosen as one of six finalists in our university's Centennial Songwriting Competition! I originally composed and arranged the song for a female soloist and orchestra. It turns out that it has to be performed live on the Finals Night on September 22. Me and my friend don't exactly have the ability to hire an entire orchestra so I had to rearrange the piece for a female soloist and a wind quintet. The grandeur has diminished considerably, but I hope it'll be good enough for the win. Just the thought that I have the chance to be composer of the centennial song of the country's top university gives me goosebumps! Wish me luck, guys! Take care and enjoy the weekend!
