Sonic Revolution Competition January 2005

Welcome one and all to 'Sonic Revolution', RPGamer's first music competition in nearly 3 years.

This competition is being held as a way to start the new year with a bang, and hopefully draw some new blood into the remix community. The competition rules and guidelines are as follows.

  • Rules
    • The purpose of this competition is to submit a new, original remix of a song(or songs) from a game(or games) that falls under RPGamer's coverage guidelines. To fulfill this goal, all submissions must be previously unreleased, unpublished remixes(not found anywhere else on the internet or as storage media) as of the start date of this contest.
    • For equality in submission quality, I am requiring that all submissions be MP3, preferably with a bit rate of 192kbps. I feel this will allow for accurate judging of the quality of a piece, since all submissions will be on a level playing field.
    • Submissions may be from any genre of the artist's choice.
    • If the artist's submission is his/her first attempt at publishing a mix, he/she may denote this with their submission and be entered to win the amateur prize, in addition to the other prizes.
    • Submissions must include the following information: Name of artist. Name of song. Original song title(s) and game(s) in which it appears. A few brief words about your composition.
    • The competition begins as of this posting, January 13, 2005. The submission deadline is 11:59PM PST, February 7th, 2005. All contest results will be posted by February 18th. Prize winners will be notified via email with details on receiving their prize(s).
    • This competition is open to all readers. No more then two entries per person will be accepted. All entries are final submissions and once posted count against your total number of entries.
  • Judging
    • There will be three judges for this contest, myself and two other judges of my designation. None of the judges will be permitted to taking part in the competition. The judging will be based on the categories below.
      • Remix (35%) - The category encompasses how well the remix represents the original work(s). The piece should be strong enough that someone familiar with the original work recognizes the source material, but that it also strong enough to stand alone from the original.
      • Creativity (50%) - This category is a critique of the artists compositional decisions in the songs creation. What has been added to really breath life into the song? Does the song flow solidly from section to section, and stay fresh without becoming repetitive? Is this song enjoyable to listen?
      • Production (15%) - This category encompasses the technical qualities of the sound, including the quality of samples used, of any recording done, and of mixing and panning.
  • Awards
    • The winner of this contest will receive a $50 gift Certificate to Electronics Boutique.
    • The first runner up will receive a copy of the "The Black Mages" second CD album.
    • The highest scoring amateur entry will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to Electronics Botique.
