Round 3: 3x3 06.19.2009
"Alas for those that never sing,
But die with all their music in them!"

- Oliver Wendell Holmes
June 19, 2009 12:01 AM GMT+8:00 - July 17, 2009 12:00 MN GMT+8:00
Theme: any RPG music composed by one of Fabula Nova Crystallis's three main composers but not from Final Fantasy
Instrumentation and Form: a three-beat-per-measure time signature and lasting for around three minutes

This round, we have a three-part theme, each part associated with the number three; hence, the title.

Inspired by the hype E3 2009 induced, your task is to create a remix based on any RPG theme created by one of Fabula Nova Crystallis's three main composers: Hamauzu, Shimomura, or Ishimoto. If multiple themes are to be used, they must all be made by the same composer, though they may be from different games. The theme(s) must also not be from a Final Fantasy game. Right off the top of my head, for Hamauzu, there's Sigma Harmonics, SaGa Frontier 2 and Unlimited Saga; for Shimomura, the Kingdom Hearts, Parasite Eve, and Mana franchises; and for Ishimoto, there's The World Ends With You.

The piece must have a three-beat-per-measure time signature, e.g. 3/2, 3/4, 3/8, etc. Shifting to different time signatures is allowed, but the total period out of the designated time signatures must not exceed half of the total playing time.

The entire track must last for approximately three minutes. A buffer of thirty seconds shall be allowed, i.e. the track must be from two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half minutes long.

The judges for this round shall be yours truly, Francis "Fermat's Last Theorem" Gayon (Sound Test Curator), Jonathon "Neist" Self (New Updates Editor), and Mike "JuMeSyn" Moehnke (Editorialist).

Criteria for Judging

Theme (10%) - This score represents how well the submission adheres to the theme of the particular round. Unlike in the previous competition's rules, a grade of 0 is not possible for this criterion, as a submission which fails to adhere to a particular round's theme in its entirety will not even be eligible for judging and shall be treated like a regular submission to Sound Test. There can be some gray area, as most rounds' themes shall be comprised of multiple conditions; thus, remixers are warned to be very specific and exact with their remixes.

Remix (35%) - The category encompasses how well the remix represents the original work(s). The piece should be strong enough that someone familiar with the original work recognizes the source material, but that it also strong enough to stand alone from the original.

Creativity (45%) - This category is a critique of the artist's compositional decisions in the songs creation. What has been added to really breathe life into the remix? Does the piece flow solidly from section to section, and stay fresh without becoming repetitive? Is listening to this song enjoyable?

Production (10%) - This category encompasses the technical qualities of the sound, including the quality of samples used, of any recording done, and of mixing and panning.
