Our miscellaneous awards section for 2008 contains the site's most played and most completed RPGs. A new addition this year is our Publisher of the Year awards, where we crown the publisher that we thought did the best job of entertaining RPGamers with their releases during the year.

Atlus USA was our pick for Publisher of the Year for a wide variety of reasons. First off, they flooded the market with so many RPGs, that it was impossible not to walk into a gaming store without running into one. It's not to say that everything that Atlus released was outstanding, but there were quite a few top notch games. Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 were at the top of the pack, but lesser known titles such as Rondo of Swords, Summon Night: Twin Age, Eternal Poison, Yggdra Union, and Etrian Odyssey II also help fill out their 2008 lineup.
But it's not just the RPGs that made Atlus stand out from the crowd, it was their dedication to their fans. The love of their fans was present in the Atlus Spoils bonus packs that included art books and soundtracks. The Atlus Faithful newsletter that keeps those interested up to date with the latest info. And last, but not least, is AtlusARAM (aka. Aram Jabbari, Public Relations Manager) and his hilariously entertaining press releases. Never did a new release get announced that he wasn't going far beyond the dry information. So in appreciation of all that the entire staff at Atlus USA has done for the RPGamer community, we easily award them Publisher of the Year for 2008.

It comes as little surprise that the most played RPG for RPGamer staff was on the Nintendo DS, the system that cannot stop selling. It also is no surprise that the RPG that we played the most was Final Fantasy IV. The journey of Cecil and his rotation of companions to save the world will always be one worth taking. Square Enix’s three-dimensional remake of the Super Nintendo classic was hardly perfect, but the pros outweighed the cons. Even the blocky polygonal characters couldn’t scare us off from enjoying this timeless tale over any other released in 2008.

The World Ends With You is a game that once you picked up, you just didn't put it down until you were finished. Sometimes you didn't even put the game down once you were finished, as the game offered a lot of post-game options. There was something particularly addicting about it. Whether it was the engaging battle system or the compelling story, the title would keep begging to be played. And where a lot of RPGs tend to get dull, The World Ends With You stays fresh; the game separates into chapters and introduces new characters and non-gimmicky twists along the way. Instead of making the game feel segregated, it rather feels like all the right puzzle pieces were being given and the answer would always be just around the corner. The World Ends With You is one of those rare titles that plays like a good book reads: once you pick it up, it's nearly impossible to put down.
