Editors' Choice

Are these games failures in their own right or did we just hype them up in our minds so high that they just couldn't reach our expectations? That's for each person to answer on their own. These are not the worst of the year, just the games that let us down in 2008.

Biggest Letdown
The Last Remnant

The Last Remnant was hyped by Square Enix as their RPG for the world. It was scheduled to release worldwide for the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360. The letdowns began during E3 2008 when gamers heard that the Xbox 360 version would be the only one confirmed to release this year. While not a problem to 360 owners, it was looking like things were not going to quite live up to all that Square Enix had hoped.

The game finally released in November of 2008 and was met with instant criticism due to graphical issues. While these issues were lessened by installing the game to the Xbox 360's hard drive, it didn't change the fact that there was much about The Last Remnant that just didn't live up to the hype. The story is mediocre and quests feel meaningless. The combat system is unique and requires a good bit of strategy, but even it has some issues such as not being able to have full control over skills and other options in combat. Overall, The Last Remnant is not a horrid game, just a game that didn't quite live up to what it could have been. It easily topped our list of biggest letdowns of 2008.

Second Place - Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was a reworking of the original formula. While it featured some original ideas, it also lacked elements that made the original so popular. RPGamers hoped that its successor would improve the formula, and return the series to the status that Final Fantasy Tactics obtained or at least improve over the GBA title. While Square Enix addressed some of those concerns, it seemed that a number of other issues cropped into this sequel, once again holding it back. While it received generally good reviews, frustrating factors such as the slow and pointless storyline, accuracy issues, and an overcrowded skill system contributed to Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift being our second biggest letdown of the year.

Third Place - Infinite Undiscovery

You may remember Infinite Undiscovery being one of our top five most anticipated games for the latter half of 2008. Well, we were sorely disappointed by what we got. After making such lofty promises as a "situational battle system" where the environment affects the combat, what tri-Ace delivered was a shambled mess. A dull combat system, horrible controls both in and out of battle, and some of the most irritating characters ever to appear in a game are only some of the atrocities the game committed, making Infinite Undiscovery one of 2008's most disappointing games.
