The Saving Throw
Achtung! Jan. 25, 2006
New day. . . same great Saving Throw.

Mail Me | Discuss | Weekly Poll | Roleplaying Forum

And so it begins. . .

This week's Saving Throw brings you stories written by... other people! I knew you guys would come through for me. Oh, and yes, I believe I promised you some tildes... now, um, about that... I searched for hours through every crack and crevice of RPGamer, and I couldn't find Matt's infinite box of tildes. I couldn't find any tildes, for that matter. Still, in a dark, dank closet in an extremely dusty part of the site, I found an unopened box at the bottom of a bunch of random trash, and in this box, I found something that must be at least as good as tildes:

^ ^

Yes, that's right: Golden carets! I'm sure they're not real gold; in fact, it's probably only cheap paint, but there you go, JC Carleski and Carabbit! I hope you enjoy them.

Anyway, as you may have noticed, the Saving Throw has moved to Wednesdays, which is a more convenient day for me to update. You should be able to expect anything submitted up through Tuesday night to make it into the column, unless it is delayed for other reasons.

Also, this week marks the beginning of a new related feature: a weekly poll for the Saving Throw. For now, this poll will be in the Roleplaying Forum. This week's poll, which can be found here, asks about what gender of character you like to play in your roleplaying adventures.

Anyway, in today's column, JC tells us about a summoning that went awry, and Carabbit tells us about some nasty magical traps her group triggered while trying to raid some treasure. Meanwhile, I wrap up my series of guides on diceless adventuring. With that, onto the column!

Gaming Tip of the Week
"It is good to be specific when one is dealing with magical items that have open-ended effects, especially when one has a cruel gamemaster."

I Need Warriors! by JC Carleski New this week
Hey, Kobolds may be rather weak, pathetic creatures, but when the odds are seventy to five, it's nice to have a Wand of Summoning on hand to help even the odds. Still, it's good to be more specific than "I need warriors!"

Chaosium Looking for Gamemasters for Gen Con Indy
Source: Chaosium

Chaosium, Inc., the publisher of the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game, is looking for volunteer gamemasters for Gen Con Indy, which will be in Indianapolis, Indiana from August 10 to 13. Event submissions for the convention began last week, and Choasium is hoping to make its submissions by the end of the month. Anyone who knows they will be in attendance and are interested in being a gamemaster should contact Dustin O'Chaosium.

And so it ends. . .

And with that, this column comes to an end. I look forward to receiving even more of your great stories, but for now, I'm outta here!
