Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth

By the time most game series reach a fifth numbered entry, players will already know largely what to expect. This held true for my E3 hands-on time with Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth as well. Known for its hardcore dungeon crawling mechanics that go so far as to have players draw their own maps using the system's stylus, Etrian Odyssey has never been one to rock the boat.

Those who have played and loved any of the previous Etrian games will feel right at home with EOV's mechanics. Players begin by creating an adventuring party out of nothing, literally creating up to 27 heroes that can be swapped into the battle party from ten different classes and four new races. On top of that, a deep cosmetic character customization system is now in place as well.

Once a party has been assembled, it's time to delve into the game's dungeons. My play time didn't turn up any noteworthy new gameplay characteristics, apart from the fact that an auto-mapping feature has been added for those who don't want to bother outlining and filling in their own maps. However, this feature is completely optional, so purists can simply turn it off. Combat still works in the same first-person party perspective, displaying the enemies but not the actual party, apart from their vitals.

The Atlus rep I spoke with hinted that, perhaps, this entry into the franchise is slightly more accessible in terms of difficulty as compared to previous games, but wouldn't provide a definite statement on the issue. RPGamer already has its own import review for the game available, so interested or worried players don't have to wait until its expected fall 2017 release to learn more.
