Rexy

Remix

Of all the mixes I've heard in the competition this has to be one of the more liberal ones I've managed to come across. The accompaniment of the source has been referenced well at the start, although given the potential behind the track it seemed to deviate further than the source than expected. It took until around 1:46 to be able to get a firmer glance of the main source progressions, but even through there it has worked in making it stand close to the original. In a similar fashion to the original's structure, this piece relies on emotion to provide a laid back mood all the way through, thus providing a slick execution all around. Given what I've seen there didn't seem to be many versions of the theme out there, but its intentions have worked in providing a good range of interest towards the listener outside its purpose as an FFT contribution. Variance on the theme seems to be all around it, what with the general melodic progressions often being provided at a liberal state for a good chunk of the time, thus aiding in generating some light variety without breaking away too much. Add to there being a different key to the original and you're in for an expansive song throughout. The structure's also very good and thoughtful, while not only fitting to the genre but also towards the relaxed focus brought all around it; even though I was hoping for the transition to the ending structure at the 4 minute mark could have been smoother, it has still worked well enough in keeping the arrangement in line.

Creativity

There did seem to be a lot of creative tendencies with the improvisation among the lines, which has helped in providing a broad and creative focus around it; mind, it could have benefited from expression down the line but it still sounds firm. Mainly the sections seem to link together well, but I have noticed a couple of hesitant pauses at 2:07 and 3:57 that may split the audience - some may think of them to disrupt the flaw, while others may see them as intentional. The nature of the piece isn't necessarily one to call "fresh", but it's smooth, laid back and has managed to do its job in emphasizing upon the moods all around. The mix did seem to suffer from some repetitious ganders within the structure of the accompaniment among the lines, but there did seem to be some rather broad areas of the melodic portions that have helped to break away from that sole aspect. The overall enjoyment on this depends on your music tastes, but then again whether you appreciate the genre or not you'll be able to find a solid track to calm the nerves all around. Very solid stuff from Gwilym.

Production

The samples chosen are shown to be deep and thoughtful, and have emphasized well on building upon the scopes of the genre in general. However their processing leaves a bit to be desired; there's a good knowledge on general EQ all around, but I felt that the drum sounds didn't quite feel as flexible as some of the others. It's also there that some of the textures are felt to be a little bit dry, most notably some of the backing the synths, but that can be felt to be intentional for the genre. I can't comment much upon any recorded elements as such, although the general sound quality has established a firm setting all around. The sound levels are shown to be okay for the most part; well balanced knowledge of sound placements all around, but I'm sure that the drums and bass could have been given enough emphasis to match with the potential behind the melodic notations. And the panning may be a bit faint, but the stereo image has been provided at an affective enough state to help fit the needs of the genre. So that said, we're in for a well polished production setting all around.

Remix

Great style capture and ambiance, excellent remixing work.

Creativity

Could have afforded some more variety between more mellow sections (like beginning and ending) and slightly less mellow sections (like everything in-between), both otherwise a pleasure.

Production

Very good samples, and very good quality; no noticable flaws in production.

Remix

Nice job capturing a song from my favorite game. Having invested more hours playing this game then I care to speak about, I can say I spent plenty of time listening to the source of this remix. You've taken a lot of liberty with the song, but you keep the theme and the feel of the original mostly intact.

Creativity

A nice, mellow arrangement here. Very smooth transitions between sections. The constant synth passage the goes through most of the midsection of the song gets on my nerves a bit, since it repeats unendingly for so long. and its upper range makes it cut right through me. Not much else to say. A nice relaxing piece.

Production

Not much to say here. Nice panning, Excellent mixing. I like the steady low hum at the beginning of the song that you use as a base for the upper part.
