Rexy

Remix

Much of the song seems to be recognizable to the Manoria source, and the inclusion of the game's main theme has also helped to further emphasize on the faithfulness for the game it came from. I felt surprised that Jeremy decided to expand a short theme into an 8 minute mix, but what he has done has managed to pull off a good amount of stops in terms of emotion. There didn't seem to be many misplaced notes all around, although the general concept may find some listeners difficult to take the whole thing in at first. There aren't many variations on the theme that I've heard of this track, but from what has been shown it has provided a strong, emotional and reflective motion all around it, which in turn have provided a good enough reason to be able to appreciate this as it is. The arrangement has provided a good amount of variance in note progressions all the way through, providing some further thought to feel all around it as well as some very strong harmonic variations, and the inclusion of the game's main theme in many areas from beyond the 3 minute mark as well as some light variance on its main melody has managed to further emphasize the good side of its faithfulness all around. The sections here are very fluently layered, and have managed to fit in a good sense of mood all around it; while it may seem to take a while to be able to adapt to it, it has still managed to provide a good sense of appreciation all around. It did face some light flaws on the line, given some uneasy textures running alongside the cello progressions from 7:30 onwards as well as the thought that given the cinematic scope I was kind of hoping for an ending that didn't seem to feel as repetitious and "fast paced" in closure. Aside from that aspect, this portion of the piece is pretty good and should be well considered by the target audience.

Creativity

Being creative in the space of 8 minutes sounds ambitious, but even here there's a lot of life breathed into the mix; while the basic progressions stay close to the source themes, the instruments that have built have worked well to provide enough interest as well as the general concept. The sections link well in general, although given the status around the track it may take a few listens to be able to fully get into it. Mind, every second of the song has something new to portray along the line, thus it has managed to keep a fresh pace behind it all. Repetition can be involved with the countermelodies and repeating of various progressions, but there is still enough interest to break away from the themes in general. I can say that the listener will enjoy it if they're into the orchestrated genre, but given the whole emotive film music status it's not exactly energetic enough to be able to absorb if you aren't into it.

Production

The samples are provided at a very clean quality for most of the time. While I can't say I'm too sure about the dense organ quality, and some lighter attack portrayed upon the woodwind instrumentation near the end, the whole setting is very delicate, well managed and pleasant to absorb. The EQs and sound processing are very delicate and well rounded for an orchestra, thus emphasizing on a realistic feel all around it. There wasn't much in the way of recorded elements, but that shouldn't be hindered too much. The sound levels are also firm for most of the time and very relaxed for its given purpose, but it's felt that from 4:12 onwards the percussive fragments were felt to be a bit too strong in comparison to some of the other sounds. Looking on at the panning though, the instruments have been provided at a very well rounded instrumental progression all around, with plenty of emphasis on textures and space all around to further emphasize on the piece's emotion. Very sweet.

Remix

Excellent capture of the style of the original music, themes are a bit lost.

Creativity

Static throughout much of the piece, ventures hardly anywhere in terms of stylistic variety within the realm of orchestral remixing.

Production

Great quality, but occasionally lacks effective change in dynamics. (I <3 the organ)

I can't believe myself on this category. Somehow, every time I listened, I managed to miss the cathedral theme. I'm gonna mostly blame myself for being an idiot. I do feel that, despite that, there are still some sections that are too long to not include any noticeable connection to the source material. But, where you don't have the themes, you do capture a powerful amount of the style from the music.

Creativity

Wow. Here is where you shine like a star. Beautiful, very moving and emotional composition throughout this. The sections flow cleanly one into the next. I can't say much more, because it would just be praise. The ending is beautiful, although I wish that second piano hit wasn't there and that the orchestra would have faded a bit faster.

Production

Overall a solid production. I think some of the brass samples could have been better, or at least better implemented. Also, I would have liked if a little more was done with the panning, to add some contrast across the stereo field.
