Rexy

Remix

The source is recognizable all the way through, and it's also here that the mix relies on the structure in there to help generate the general emphasis provided in the song. Its execution shows no signs of any misplaced notes, which have managed to help in providing some form of flow towards the listener, but there were various technical issues that have managed to make it struggle in terms of providing a good direction of flow around it. Looking on at the emphasis behind the arrangement it isn't the best interpretation of the theme I have managed to hear, but it still had some light promise. Even here its dependence on the theme has provided a strong grasp upon the general structure, thus making the piece grow old pretty quickly; not even the 4/4 time signature adaptation seems to be enough to help generate enough interest outside Chrono gamers. I can say the structure was pretty okay, but there seemed to be various portions throughout that seemed to be asking for further extensions to generate further interest upon its target audience. Add to that the ending seemed to be a bit sudden and sloppily executed, and you'll see that this track could have done with a tighter structure to help build on its foundations.

Creativity

There didn't seem to be too much that managed to breathe much life into the piece aside from the time signature change, but the minimal establishments have helped to at least keep the song going. Most of the time the sections link well, although I did manage to notice a light moment of hesitance as provided at 2:18. Mind, some of these segments do in fact get old a bit too quickly, even with some of the problems as pointed out in the Remix paragraph. The progressions of the theme here have provided some repetition on the lines, which could seem to subtract from the track a slight amount on the lines. Generally, the audience will be able to find this arrangement very difficult to absorb, even with the technical quirks brought all the way around it. Thus, the enjoyment factor seems to be pretty much average.

Production

The samples chosen sound a bit on the cheap side, even with some lack of expression all around them and not a lot of thought as granted towards the nature of some crucial elements like the brass and polysynths, but I can grant props towards some of the pads and drum samples. The EQs seem to be high in treble, which can provide a painful experience for some people; that and the instruments feeling really dry and dense also playing a major factor in that portion of the mix. There wasn't much in the recorded portions, but the voice sample at the start has managed to help create a good sense of atmosphere; the effects were felt to be a bit on the quiet side but it has still worked well for the most part. What I see as the main flaw in this (as gestured in other paragraphs) is the insane amount of clipping provided - that has managed to provide a vast amount of unease towards the audience, even though he's had a good attempt at trying to hide that aspect in some of the quieter sections. Panning has been used efficiently, but again it seemed to impede the listener when fragments of clipping seemed to be in stereo. If he mastered this track a bit quieter, then most of the crucial production flaws would have been erased, so I hope he would bear that in mind for his future work.

Remix

Interesting effects although a bit excessive, too similar to the original.

Creativity

Stale sound by conclusion, could have used a lot more variety in technique and instrumentation.

Production

Weird (but effective) samples, phaser/chorus effect overdone; perceived clipping at beginning (perhaps minor clipping throughout).

Remix

You do a lot of work to incorporate the original material into this piece. Truly well done, as the theme is recognizable, yet not required for this song to be enjoyable.

Creativity

Hmm. I have listened to this song over and over, and its still very hard for me in this category. I think some sections could have used a bit more dynamic contrast in certain breakdown sections, such as at 2'20-2'24. In that instance, more crescendo could have been used, and a harder hit on the landing. Also, the ending is a little weak. Despite those issues, this song is good, solid piece that does a good job representing its genre.

Production

Ouch.... Clipping. A lot of clipping at the beginning. Im not sure what caused it, but this is just something that can't be allowed to make its way into a piece. Also, lots of scratchy, seemingly unintentional, high end distortion occurs in the busier sections. But all is not lost here, as the panning is done well, although you may want to watch how much low end you put in.
