Rexy

Remix

The faithfulness towards the source seems to be closer towards the Saria reference more than Zelda, but with what has been layered out there seems to be enough familiarity to fit with the general scope of the piece. Generally there seems to be a pretty good execution behind the mix, but when hearing both themes played together there seemed to be a fair amount of insularity towards the progressions in general. There are a lot of arrangements out there on the web covering both of these two themes, but from what has been generally provided this isn't too bad in concept - it could have worked a bit better with some variance on the theme, although the string parts and some light variation to Zelda's Theme has helped among the lines, and its structure could have also been given a closer look into. I felt that the ideas behind it are pretty good, but there were some sections around the middle that had a jerky execution, most notably with some of the live recorded elements; I can't say I'm fond of the ending structure either, as personally I thought that seemed to be a bit on the cheesy side. All in all this isn't bad, but it could have been better.

Creativity

The solo parts provided are okay when it came to breathing in a fair amount of life, but in general there seemed to be nothing much out of the ordinary to be able to deviate from the source - most of the textures also seems to feel a bit thin for an electronica piece, which could end up dampening the structure. The elements seem to link together in an okay fashion, but sometimes it can be a bit too okay for repetitious reasons, and adding to the sloppy transition to the live piano section at 2:24, this has generated an uneasy segment provided for the song. There's not much material on the line to consider "fresh", but the general concept behind the performance have emphasized on it not being too bad. However the mix depends on repetition to be able to be driven forward, most notably shown by the accompaniment providing the same opening structures of Lost Woods all the way through, as well as too many links towards the same melodic source components themselves. So I feel it may be able to fit with the Zelda fan in mind, but I can't see much attention being spawn outside of there.

Production

Considering this user is working with Fruityloops, I was actually surprised with the choices of sampled sounds used here - they seem to be clean and well chosen without being brought to irritate the audience. It did seem to benefit from some light EQ choices upon the bass-dependant sounds, but outside from there I felt the sounds were really dry and under processed to fit for its target genre. The recorded element in this is a live keyboard recording providing a woodwind sound font and a live piano performance; even though the concept was good the recorded portions were filled with hiss, thus providing on a low-fi quality all around it, and I have no idea over the importance of the cheer at the end either - it just made the recorded elements struggle a bit more to match with the sampled sounds. The sound levels themselves are generally okay, so all's good there, however there did seem to be some areas that I think the recorded instrument levels could have been given a further volume boost to match with the sampled sounds. I have also noticed that the panning has been used affectively, so that's good to see - even though some of the textures seemed to be a bit extreme near the start I see that to be expected of the genre. Mind, for a newcomer some aspects of this setup aren't bad, but I'm sure that he can improve with working on recorded portions in the future to help push his capabilities to the next level.

Remix

Very repetitious throughout most of the work, but charming nonetheless--the themes could have withstood a LOT more development, but it's (only) moderately effective as it is.

Creativity

A lot of variation throughout, but generally stays well within limits of excessive variation; one of the more impressive 'house' remixes I've heard.

Production

Generally great samples (with some exceptions--i.e. trumpets); no noticable flaws in production.

Redbeastmage

Remix

I like how you incorporate the various themes on top of one another. This is not easy to do, but you make it sound like its child's play.

Creativity

I like what you've done this this piece, although I wish you would have done it another way. Your choice of instrumention leaves, as I mention below, a lot of missing mid-range. The bells cut through me, and the flutes cut through, as a result of mixing, and instrument choice. Its an enjoyable listen, but its lacking that certain something to really put it over the top. And I love your ending.

Production

I love what you have done with the panning. I really do. Absolutely a trip to have my ears trying to place something in the stereo field while its running back and forth between my speakers. Unfortunately, there is to little mid-frequency material in this piece. For large sections, its seems like an empty song, with high end material and low end, and nothing in between. Also, the noise floor in the song is too high, at least its to high for your dynamics to dip as low as they do. It begins to sound like tape hiss, and thats just not ok when you are dealing with digital equipment.
