Radiant Historia

It was shocking to see such a recent release do so well in the tally, because Radiant Historia has not even been out for half a year at this point. That is just a testament to the game's quality. RPGamers have been craving a solid Japanese RPG for the system and Radiant Historia delivers that in spades. Crossing time-travel, a solid political story, a unique combat system, and a wonderful soundtrack, the game has all the makings of something RPGamers should be taking note of, if they are not already.

Radiant Historia is similar to a Choose Your Own Adventure book, as players are offered multiple choices at certain points in the game. One path will take the player to an undesirable end while the other will be the proper one, though often failure is required before the correct path is available. It's the whole package that makes Radiant Historia. The story and multiple options is a key factor, but the combat is interesting as well, featuring a grid-based battle system where players are encouraged to knock enemies together to deal more damage. Yoko Shimomura's soundtrack also helps enhance the appeal, as it adds a spark to in-game locales, giving it the strong personality that solidified its place as one of our favorite DS RPGs of all time.
