Square Enix's Final Fantasy XI, a PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360 MMORPG which was first released in North America on October 28, 2003, already has four retail expansion packs. These, in order of release, are: Rise of the Zilart (bundled with the full version of the North American release), Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urhgan, and Wings of the Goddess. Each of these expansions added a sizable amount of content to Final Fantasy XI's already massive world of Vana'diel.

Square Enix has announced that three more expansions are coming, though not in the same form as the previous four. The upcoming expansions, labeled as "scenario expansions," will focus on creating new story threads rather than introducing new areas or classes, and will only be available to purchase and download online through the PlayOnline Viewer. Masato Kato, who created storyline and scenarios for the original release of Final Fantasy XI and the Rise of the Zilart expansion, will be leading work on the three scenario expansions. Kato, now a freelance scenario writer, has also previously worked on games such as Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Final Fantasy VII.

Each expansion will release simultaneously worldwide, with the first expansion, entitled A Crystalline Prophecy - Ode of Life Bestowing, scheduled for Spring 2009. All that is known about the release dates for the next two expansions, A Moogle Kupo d'Etat - Evil in Small Doses and A Shantotto Ascension - The Legend Torn, Her Empire Born, is that they will come sometime in the months after the first.

In A Crystalline Prophecy - Ode of Life Bestowing, players will explore unexplained happenings and mysteries related to the appearance of a giant crystal above Jeuno. A Moogle Kupo d'Etat - Evil in Small Doses will detail a harrowing nightmare which evolves from a simple drop of rainwater falling on a Mog House desperately in need of repairs. A Shantotto Ascension - The Legend Torn, Her Empire Born requires players to investigate a strange personality shift of the eccentric Professor Shantotto.
