The Good Life

White Owls Inc is a new studio formed by Deadly Premonition and D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die creator Hidetaka Suehiro (aka SWERY). Its debut title, The Good Life, is billed as a "Debt Repayment Life Simulation RPG", and the developer has turned to crowdfunding platform Fig to raise fund for the game's creation.

In The Good Life, players control Naomi, a photographer from New York. After being embroiled in a scandal and left in debt, Naomi takes a job that sends her to Rainy Woods, a small town in Northern England that is said to be the happiest town in the world. Naomi is tasked with photographing the town's secrets and sending reports about its inhabitants to her employer. However, things soon turn a bit more serious when a murder occurs in the town.

Perhaps the biggest oddity about Rainy Woods is that everyone in it, including Naomi, turns into cats at night. Certain paths and areas are only accessible while Naomi is a cat, so exploring at night will be key to finding out more information. Players are able customise Naomi's look (and her cat form).

The game's structure involves completing both a story mission and repaying some of Naomi's debt before moving onto the next part of the story. Naomi can earn money both by taking photos of interesting things or doing various part-time jobs. However, she will also need to keep up her stamina by eating various meals, or potentially hunting small creatures while in her cat form. She will also need to spending some time sleeping.

White Owls Inc is teaming up with Crimson Dragon developer G-rounding and Répubilque developer Camouflaj to create The Good Life for PC and PlayStation 4. The campaign is looking for $1.5m in funding, with the campaign ending on October 13, 2017. Those who pledge at least $29 will receive a digital copy of the game, which is initially planned for a 2019 release.
