Gotta Spell 'Em All
Pokémon

Young children in the Los Angeles area may want to visit their local library this Monday, July 30th. As part of the North American release of the Game Boy Color's Pokémon Crystal, Nintendo will hold the first ever "Bee a Pokémon Master Speller" contest. By spelling the names of various Pokémon characters, specifically the Unown, an alphabet-like species of Pokémon found in the ruins of Alph, one of 30 contestants will go home with a Pokémon Crystal trophy and a $2,000 mutual fund towards his or her college tuition.

As if the chance to win by spelling popular characters' names is not enough incentive, Nintendo has hired a celebrity judge to sweeten the deal: Ben Stein. The host of Comedy Central's "Win Ben Stein's Money," as well as star of numerous film and television roles, will be testing children's Poké-spelling at the Mark Taper Auditorium in the Los Angeles Public Library's central branch from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Pokémon Crystal is Nintendo's newest update to the best-selling franchise, having sold over 1.5 million copies alone in Japan. Crystal features monsters from Pokémon Gold and Silver, as well as numerous other additions including full color support, new animations, and new characters with whom to interact and trade. Pokémon Crystal will be released this Monday for $34.99.
