Indie Update: Sixth Edition
04.21.2017

Indie Games

We return with the sixth edition of our series designed to help RPGamer cater to the ever-increasing number of indie titles that our staff regrettably does not have the resources to provide full coverage to. The idea of this column is to quickly pass on the word about certain games to our readers that they might otherwise not be made aware of, and we hope both readers and developers find this useful.

This edition of our indie update column features the following titles: Druidstone, Sonny, Tanzia, MidBoss, and Fort Triumph.

Druidstone

Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest is a fantasy RPG being delevoped by Ctrl Alt Ninja Ltd., a new studio founded by a team that previously worked on Legend of Grimrock. Players take control of a recently-reincarnated druid looking for details of their past in a procedurally-generated forest filled with ruins and monsters. The game features turn-based combat on a 2D grid, and players will have find equipment quickly as they start off barehanded with only a simple cloak. Druidstone is being developed for PC; a release date is yet to be announced.

Sonny

Sonny is an indie sci-fi RPG from Armor Games and Krin Jaungbhanich released this week for PC and Mac via Steam. Released earlier this year for iOS, Sonny features turn-based battles as players guide the eponymous character and his allies through a post-apocalyptic world after he is brought back from the dead. Sonny is available to download now for $7.99/£5.59/€7.99, with a 15% launch discount available until April 24, 2017.

Tanzia

Independent developer Arcanity Inc, which is made up of various industry veterans from studios including Obsidian Entertainment, inXile Entertainment, and Sony Online Entertainment, announced that Tanzia will be coming to Steam Early Access on PC next week on April 28, 2017. An action RPG, Tanzia sees palyers controlling a shaman trying to prevent his island home from beign overrun by evil. The developer plans to be in Early Access for a couple of months before releasing the full version, which will unlock all of the game's chapters.

MidBoss

Developer Kitsune Games' MidBoss is now available as a closed beta for those who have ordered the game through itch.io, where it is available for $14.99. The developer also revealed the full release date for the game as May 23, 2017, when it will be released for PC through Steam. MidBoss tasks players with possessing the defeated enemies in order to become stronger. Starting out as an imp, players need to spend time unlocking abilities from other dungeon denizens, eventually aiming to defeat the dungeon's endboss and take their place.

Fort Triumph

In our final game of the column, we return to Kickstarter. Fort Triumph is a tactical RPG currently undergoing a crowdfunding campaign. Inspired by cover-based tactical RPGs such as XCOM, Fort Triumph looks to bring the focus on cover to a fantasy world and let players manipulate the battlefield to great effect. The game is initially planned for a 2018 release, with a demo available to download now for PC, Mac, or Linux through its Kickstarter page. The developers are looking for $75,000 in funding by May 23, 2017.

Please note that coverage is solely at staff discretion. Developers are asked to please not personally petition RPGamer staff via e-mail or social networking. Coverage is not guaranteed. If you are a developer looking for coverage please check our indie submission guide. Thank you!
