Dragon Quest Heroes

Omega Force and Tecmo Koei have been working with a few series to add in their own brand of hack and slash action. The latest one to get in on the action is Dragon Quest. Zack Webster had a chance to try out a demo of Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below at E3 and reported back on his findings.

Along comes Square Enix and another mouthful of a title, this time Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below. Selling itself as Dynasty Warriors meets Dragon Quest, the game seems like a simple enough concept to appeal to a lot of people. The demo I tried was less of a traditional Dynasty Warriors affair and one that seems unique to Heroes: Fighting a giant cyclops.

Plenty of enemies still littered the battleground, mostly as means of healing and picking up other items, but the main draw of the stage was stopping the cyclops. If there was any wonder what a Dynasty Warriors game would feel like if it were about fighting one enemy instead of many, the answer is that it's a mixed bag. The cyclops was a huge damage sponge, soaking every hit, normal and special, I threw at it. To help mitigate this, there were numerous heavy weapons strewn about the level that when striking the cyclops' weak point — his eye — caused much better damage, though they could only be fired three times before a cooldown started and it was back to slashing at ankles and thighs. In my two attempts to defeat it, I came close but the timer ran out both times. The fight never really changed as it went on; I was doing pretty much exactly the same thing all the way through.

Heroes isn't completely without charm, though. The series art style is quite beautifully realized and the game played rather smoothly. Each character played differently and each felt fully realized and interesting to play as, so fans of the series definitely have something to get excited about. The game hits PlayStation 4 in October.
