Welcome to another edition of RPGamer's Kickstarter Check-In feature, where we highlight some crowd-funding campaigns that may be of interest to our readers. In this edition, we have three campaigns that have come to our attention: The Bard's Tale IV, Planet Centauri, and Pixel Starships.
The Bard's Tale IV
Thirty years after the release of the first game in the series, inXile Entertainment has launched the Kickstarter campaign for The Bard's Tale IV. The single-player fantasy dungeon crawler will be made for PC, Mac, and Linux, with the release currently planned for October 2017.
The game uses a turn-based battle system where commands are carried out immediately after being given and players do not need to wait for actions to play out before assigning commands to other character. Players develop their own customisable party of adventurers through various puzzle-filled dungeons and branching quests around the rebuilt city of Skara Brae.
inXile Entertainment is looking for $1,250,000 in funding by Saturday July 11, 2015. Those that want to earn a copy of the game for their pledge will need to put down $27 for a downloadable copy, although there are fifteen thousand copies available at $20. Those that pledge at the $20 Reward Tier or higher in the first twenty-four hours of the campaign will also receive a free digital copy of Wasteland 2, The Witcher, or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.
Planet Centauri is a sandbox side-scrolling RPG from Montpellier-based developer Permadeath. The game is confirmed to be releasing for PC, Mac, and Linux regardless of the campaign's success, however, the developer hopes to bring the game to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One, with any extra funding also serving to improve the game's quality.
The game is set on the titular planet Centauri, and has players explore the surroundings while attempting to build up their own community of NPCs. Planet Centauri includes both LAN and internet multiplayer, customisable spells and AI behaviours, monster taming, a cooking system, dynamic weather effects, and mod support.
Permadeath is looking for €27,000 in funding by Friday June 26, 2015. Those who pledge can get a digital copy of the game on PC, Mac, or Linux for €13, with an early version demo available to download from the Kickstarter page. The PC, Mac, and Linux version is planned for August 2015, while the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One versions are pencilled in for May 2016 should the Kickstarter campaign be successful.
Australian developer SavySoda's Pixel Starships is a cross between RPG and strategic management game with a 2D, 8-bit graphical style. Players are in charge of running and developing their own spaceship in a persistent online universe. The game is planned for release on iPhone and iPad in December 2015, with a PC version planned for 2016. The game will include microtransactions in the form of StarBux, which can be used to speed up ship development.
SavySoda is looking for AU$20,000 in funding by Thursday June 25, 2015. RPGamers who wish to get a copy of the game with their backer rewards can pledge AU$6.00 (around US$4.60) for a digital copy on release.
