Nintendo Touches on Current Status of DS
05.09.2006

MATT SLODERBECK
NEWS REPORTER

Nintendo

As previously reported, Nintendo held its pre-E3 event today. Along with plenty of news about the new Wii, there was some discussion about its newest handheld offering, the Nintendo DS. George Harrison, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Nintendo, did the honors.

Over 16 million systems have sold since the system launched last year. Nintendo WiFi, the online service available through certain Nintendo DS games has over 1.3 million distinct users and more than 40 million individual gaming sessions have occurred. Several games were mentioned in particular – Nintendogs has sold six million copies in 13 months, and Brain Age topped five million units in Japan alone, with another 120,000 sold in the US in only three weeks.

New games announced for the system were Yoshi's Island 2, Starfox DS, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2, and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam DS. Two titles more likely to be of interest to RPGamers were Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team – both will be released on September 18 for the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance respectively. Also noteworthy was the statement that the previously announced The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass was officially named as a sequel to the GameCube's The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. In all, 100 new DS games will be released in North America this year.

Many thanks to correspondent Bryan Boulette for the on-site reporting.
