It has taken some time, but Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies has quietly worked its way up to an impressive number of sales. It is now being reported that the most recent entry in the venerable RPG franchise has shipped more than 5.3 million copies, making it the best-selling entry in the Dragon Quest series. Of these sales, more than a million were made in North America and Europe.

Dragon Quest IX was originally released on July 11, 2009 in Japan, and came to the rest of the world a year later. The next game in the series, Dragon Quest X, was announced for the Wii back in 2008, but Square-Enix has yet to reveal anything else about it.
