Dark Souls

In a recent 4Gamer interview, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Dark Souls, shared some new details about the game and its development. One difference between this game and its spiritual predecessor Demon's Souls is that game areas will be seamlessly connected rather than split into stages. There will also be a variety of map styles other than the dark fantasy of Demon's Souls such as high fantasy and hell.

Dark Souls is going to be longer as well, clocking in at 60 hours rather than the expected 30 to 40 hours of Demon's Souls. There will also be close to 100 enemies, nearly three times that of Demon's Souls, several new pieces of armor and weapons, and new magic as well, including the ability to turn into objects. Going into more details on weapons, Miyazaki stated that they will have different motions and changes in speed and recovery time depending on the parameters of players’ characters. There will also be a weapon fortification system, something Miyazaki felt was poorly done in Demon's Souls.

Miyazaki did not go into too much detail on online play, but he did talk about what he calls “shared play experience” and “mutual role playing.” In the former, he said that there will be gradual effects on other players, which will make them feel that they have friends who are experiencing this difficult game with them. The latter concept includes cooperative and competitive sessions added into and extending the single-player game. As for DLC, there are no current plans, though this may change in the future.

Miyazaki did not reveal the exact reason why this game is not a direct sequel to Demon's Souls, though he is glad that it is giving him a chance to use new ideas and concepts. He also affirmed Dark Soul’s 2011 release window, though he did not give a more precise date.
