Nintendo Plans To Instigate Revolution

Toyoda Ken, PR Office Manager of Nintendo of Japan, recently confirmed the appearance of Revolution at this year's E3 in an interview with Japanese magazine ITmedia Games. Revolution is, more specifically, the codename being used for Nintendo's next-generation console. Little more than this was said, however; the company is still debating how best to present the console without revealing too much.

"We are still looking at E3 as a launching pad for the 'Revolution' platform, and are deliberating if we should feature the actual console, visuals, or simply illustrate the concept behind it," Ken said, adding, "While we are aiming to make some form of positive impression, we also want to avoid giving away too much, and are therefore currently in a dilemma about the situation." Furthermore, Ken said that Nintendo had, "absolutely no intention of approaching our new hardware with the intent of making it an extension of the line of hardware we've released up to this point." This almost definitely excludes a possible "GameCube 2;" thus the title of Revolution.

When asked about external pressures and competing companies, Ken said that "the fundamental approach to making things at Nintendo will not change," and that the company was "embarking on a different direction than our competitors." He even went so far as to take a jab at the stat-and-tech-heavy announcements of Sony and Microsoft, saying, "Fun isn't something that can be expressed in figures, and we are ever mindful of how we can illustrate the difference offered by our particular brand of fun."

The DS will also see a good deal of floor time at E3, a fact partially due to the show's proximity to the March 11 European launch date. "Following the upcoming release of the DS in Europe," Ken said, "We are looking to use E3 as a means of generating additional momentum for the platform."
