Square-Enix Expands on Code Age Plans

Code Age

Back in November, Square-Enix mysteriously included a bonus DVD with the Japanese release of Dragon Quest VIII. On this DVD was a short, cel-shaded trailer that resembled the company's unique title, Unlimited SaGa. However, this game was not a SaGa game at all; it was a "new concept brand," according to Square-Enix, titled Code Age.

At that time, very little was known about Code Age, save that it will be directed by the illustrious Yusuke Naora (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X, The Bouncer, Unlimited SaGa, and Advent Children). Very little is still known about the game itself, but some light has been shed on both the story and the story's progression.

Code Age follows the tale of a world falling apart, several select children inhabiting this broken world, and the decisions forced upon them by this world. "In order to survive, mankind must evolve," states Code Age's intro. This yarn is to be progressed, not through a purely electronic medium, but through a manga series as well. The first installment is to appear in the upcoming issue of Shonen Gangan, which will hit Japan on February 12.

The monthly Shonen Gangan is probably best known for the Fullmetal Alchemist series, whose runaway success is due to partly to its inclusion in both the video game and anime universes. If early signs have not been misread, then Code Age looks to follow this same course.
