Earlier this week, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts released the winners of their game awards. The categories featured at this awards ceremony were Adventure, Strategy, Action, Design, Sound, Technical Achievement, Multiplayer, Sports, Racing, Animation/intro, Music, Children's Game, PC Game, PlayStation 2 Game, Mobile Game, Gamecube Game, Game Boy Advance Game, and the Year's Best Game.

The surprising award usurper of the ceremony was Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, snagging five BAFTAs for Action, Design, PC Game, PS2 Game, and Sound. Game on any Platform, the game of the year award, went to Activision's Call of Duty.

Other winners of multiple BAFTAs were Nintendo's Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising and Sony's Eye Toy: Play. Advance Wars 2 walked off with the awards for Game Boy Advance Game and Strategy, and Eye Toy: Play attained the BAFTAs for Children's Game and Technical Achievement. In addition to the aforementioned games, platform awards were given to LucasArts' Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which snagged the Xbox Game BAFTA, Nintendo's Metroid Prime, which grasped the Gamecube Game BAFTA, and the Mobile Game BAFTA going to the mobile adaptation of Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker seized the BAFTA for Adventure Game, EA Sports' FIFA 2004 took the Sports Game award, and Project Gotham Racing 2 won the award for Racing Game. Battlefield 1942 nabbed the award for Multiplayer Game category, while the BAFTA for the Sound category went to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Namco's Soul Calibur 2 rounded out the awards by taking the BAFTA for Animation/intro.

This was the first year in which these awards were distributed as their own ceremony, as before, the gaming awards were tacked in with the interactive entertainment awards. The ceremony was held February 24 at London's Raddison SAS Portman Hotel. The ceremony accommodated 350 guests of the gaming industry.
