Square Enix recently announced that it is about to broaden the horizons of Vana'Diel by adding another area to Final Fantasy XI. On February 10, the company will open beta testing of a new area to the public, but only for Japanese players. The beta testing will take place in Real Vana'Diel, a Tokyo game cafe dedicated to Final Fantasy XI, with the development team watching over the shoulders of the players. So far, no significant details about the area have been revealed, but screenshots on Square Enix's Japanese website have shed some light on the mysterious new realm. The new area, known as "limbo" for now, features an ominous stone arena guarded by intimidating golems.
Since its release in Japan and North America, Final Fantasy XI has garnered a user base of over 500,000 members and over one million created characters. The PlayStation 2 version will arrive in North America this March.
