Rocket Slime Impression

"Rocket Slime is one of those games that you cannot help but fall in love with the moment you pick it up."

We recently got a chance to sit down at the Square-Enix press conference and take a look at Rocket Slime for the Nintendo DS. Rocket Slime is one of those games that you cannot help but fall in love with the moment you pick it up. Time was limited but we got to run through the introductory chapter as well as give the multiplayer mode a try. The introductory chapter quickly brings the player up to speed on the basic game mechanics. Picture this: there are two really big tank bases. The player controls their slime and uses it to load various ammunitions into two cannons in their base. One cannon shoots at a 45 degree angle, the other shoots directly horizontally. Your opponent will be doing the same thing. Your goal is to destroy the opposing base by shelling it until its armor is destroyed, and then infiltrating their base and destroying the equipment inside. As internal equipment is destroyed, the bases will produce ammo at a decreasing rate and the quality of the ammo will be reduced as well.

The actual control scheme for rocket is pretty innovative as well. Rocket can stretch his body and slingshot himself forward for quick bursts of speed. He also uses this technique to bounce objects into the air and catch them on his head. The most amusing moment of this play session was discovering that you can actually become a slime knight by picking up a small knight doll. The only disappointing news is that Rocket Slime will be restricted to two players.
