Negative Ions

For those unfamiliar with me, I'm a part of the RPGamer news staff, bringing you the latest info from the RPG front lines. I've also gotten the chance to play around in various parts of the site, including some of the graphical work. I'm a digital art student in my final semester, so I'm certainly looking forward to this week's work. If you happen to find this interesting, there's more me over here.
Now, on to the pretty stuff.

New Fan Art - 03/17/01

Vivi of Final Fantasy IX
"Power from Within"
Artwork by Laura

Comments: Vivi is just so cute =). I started this right when I got FFIX (around New Years) and, after going through some 'works in progress' on my hard-drive, I decided I should finish it up. I really like the way it turned out, especially the colors. This is one picture where I actually made the background before the character, instead of the other way around. Well, enjoy. ^_^

Asellus of SaGa Frontier
"My Lady Asellus"
Artwork by Sakana

Comments: A sexy version of Ase!! In short, I like to call Asellus by the name "Ase." I drew her in this red costume by referring to Tomomi Kobayashi's image of Asellus.

Kuja of Final Fantasy IX
"Balcony Wind"
Artwork by Yapi

Comments: Ehh, sorry about the stupid title. Couldn't think of anything. Anyway! What girl is not in love with Kuja!?! He's so pretty!!! Naturally I had to do him (no, not that way). This little number was colored with Copic Markers and Colleen Coloring Pencils. Don't know what else to say about it, except that I can hardly do Kuja's beauty justice, but I did try!

Vincent Valentine of Final Fantasy VII
"Count Valentine"
Artwork by Teri Stearns

Comments: Vincent Valentine, is he a vampire or not? Well, I decided to take liberties with Vincent's traditional wardrobe and see how he'd look in the old-style Bela Lugosi's Dracula vampire attire. I think it suits him quite well! XD
Very handsome Dracula indeed. Old Bela's rolling over in his grave now, for sure. (Link is a detailed close-up.)

Cinna of Final Fantasy IX
"Cinna is Happy"
Artwork by Dochuki

Comments: I love Cinna because of his emotional attachment to his hammer and Garnet doll, so I had to draw him. This is my first real fan-art, which I drew in paint then shaded and touched up in Ulead photo editor.

Geno, Princess Toadstool, Mario, Mallow, Bowser of Super Mario RPG
"The Eternal Struggle"
Artwork by David T. Mitchell

Comments: Even when they're supposed to be working together, the years of animosity come between Mario and Bowser! Here, an impromptu competition breaks out when the party stops for a bite to eat.
I thought the Fan Art section could use a dose of Nintendo, so I submitted this. Drawn in pen and ink, colored in Corel Photo-Paint 8.

Lucia of Lunar 2: Eternal Blue
"Grinning too widely?"
Artwork by Ling

Comments: I drew Lucia because one of my good school friends asked me to. I rather like the way her hair came out. My biggest complaint, though, is that the expression on her face is a bit out of character.

Kuja of Final Fantasy IX
"Kuja"
Artwork by Pamela Ramali

Comments: The beautiful villain from FF IX ^^~ I modified the clothing quite a bit ^^;;; Luv the hair~! Cool villains always have long grey hair! XD XD

Jowy Atreides of Suikoden II
"Exiled from Kyaro"
Artwork by Shadow Nexus

Comments: This is a pic from a while ago. Jowy is a very interesting character and there isn't much Suikoden fan art out there. I like this pic, it is my second CG after all, and it came out pretty good.

Freya Crescent of Final Fantasy IX
"Stand"
Artwork by Snowdon

Comments: A much better picture of Freya than 'JUMP!'. Well, not as dynamic, but better drawn and with less mistakes on the design. Drew this right after getting the FF9 art book (which, unfortunately, only had three pictures of Freya. The overused FMV scene of her on the ground in Burmecia, the overused picture of the FMV model in the boring 'I'm standing with nothing better to do' pose, and one sketch which was put to the side near the book binding).

Merrip Shards

I commend all the artists for some absolutely gorgeous work. Perhaps I will have to do some work of my own and submit it some day soon.
I'm not sure what tips I can give you that you haven't heard before, but here are a few random things I've learned:

  • Make use of Photoshop's Levels option. You can use this to bring out or subdue the darks and lights of your work, as well as to control the midtones. By shifting the levels around, you can bring an extra feeling of drama to your art.
  • Pay attention to your resolution. If you never intend to put this image anywhere but on the net, then just work at 72 dpi. For print, try to keep it at least 200. I prefer 300. But there is really no reason to go higher than that, since you won't be able to tell the difference on most printers.
  • Don't forget that Photoshop (or whatever you are using) is just a tool. Your art comes through you, and that tool can help if you know how to use it. But never mistake your tools for the source of your art.
  • Get a tablet! A computer mouse is most definitely inferior to a drawing tablet, and this will show in the quality of your work. Wacom makes some excellent tablets, and the smaller ones should be affordable to almost anyone. Using a tablet definitely takes some getting used to, but you will find it to be a great tool to utilize in your art.
Again, a thanks to our artistically talented fans for sharing their gifts with us all. Send in fanart for Silky this week, and try to hang around negative ions, because they make you feel better.
