Silk StrandsTitles of artworks are important... Without the title, the Mona Lisa would be "That portrait of some smiling woman that Leonardo did". However, it seems more and more common that artists leave off titles entirely, or just entitle their work the name of the character. While this isn't exactly a bad thing, it's helpful for the viewer to get an idea of the intent of the picture if it has a more descriptive title. Even if it's not really conencted to the subject in the picture, if it reminds you of what the picture makes you think of, or how you felt while drawing it, it's a good title. A good title helps immensely in the transfer of ideas from artist to viewer, wether the artist is a painter, or an author. In theory, a good title should be easy to come up with. In practice, it's a different story. As I said, while titling a work of art, try to think about how you felt while creating it, or what you want to convey to the viewer. That's really about it. |
