Konami didn't have much in the way of RPGs this year on the show floor, but one that was there belongs to a well known series of games. Suikoden Tierkreis is the latest Suikoden title and the first for the Nintendo DS, and it shows promise. From first glance it doesn't seem like the best Suikoden game, but it is not a complete disappointment either.

"a pretty solid offering and might be worth a look if you like the series."

Like almost all the other DS RPGs, the game had a lot of solid voice acting; it appears this feature is becoming a standard rather than an exception to the rule. The demo showed a small cutscene from the game's plot as well as a small dungeon crawl and some randomly triggered battles. The battle system is quite similar to other Suikoden titles in terms of turn order and available skills, but the combat view is from an isometric angle like Final Fantasy III DS.

In the middle of some of the cutscenes were anime sequences, which were the graphical highlight of the game. Gameplay graphics didn't nearly hold up to that standard, and were the most visible weak point. One feature that does deserve mentioning is the game's way of skipping scenes. Players are given the option to fast forward through the scenes by touching the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. This is nice if you want to cut through boring parts but not miss the scene entirely, and it was a nice extra to have.

So, what to think of this game? Like mentioned earlier, it's not the best Suikoden game by any means, but it is a pretty solid offering and might be worth a look if you like the series. It is far too early to tell as Suikoden Tierkreis won't be released until 2009 in North America, but it should be an interesting title when it comes out.
