Available only in video form at E3, Boktai looks like it’s going to be one of
those games people talk about for years to come. The video started with a short
anime featuring two kids running frantically around to find the best light so
they could charge the hero of Boktai’s gun, which uses the energy of the sun,
and to slay a vampire. This was actually rather cool, because not only does the
vampire need to be defeated via a boss battle, but then the hero has to drag the
vampire and his coffin out into the sun, and activate a magic weapon that
defeats the bloodsucker once and for all.
The game isn’t a straight shooting kill romp either. In a castle, you have to
conserve your energy where there isn’t any natural sunlight, and sneaking past
enemies and tricking them into fighting each other looks to be a big part of the
game. The game plays out in a pseudo-3D environment, and some of the game’s
video looked like it was right out of a GBA version of Metal Gear Solid. I
can’t wait to actually get my hands on Boktai and see how it plays, though I
hope it isn’t at E3 next year; the complete lack of natural sunlight would get
me killed pretty quick.
