What the Hell?

Don't you just love the moments in games that make your jaw drop? No, I am not talking about stunning cut scenes, or amazing panoramas. In fact, it has nothing to do with graphics. Am I referring to moments where game glitches make your alter ego in the game do weird and unforeseen things, such as the Mega Man 3 mega-pit-jump? No, this is also incorrect.

So, to what am I referring to then? My friends, I am referring to those simple WTH? moments where you see something that really shouldn't be there. Like walking through the vast dunes of Valkurm and suddenly seeing Mario and Link traipsing by. Questing for the Soul Edge as Mitsurugi and having to defend yourself from the unexpected attack of Darth Vader (whose lightsaber should totally destroy you, yet doesn't.)

These previous sights can be explained away as simple cameos. That said, nothing I have ever seen in a game (and actually remember) has made me question the game designers' choice more that something that bothered me in The Witcher. In this game, the hero, Geralt of Rivia, often explores the lost tombs of kings and ancient warriors, often lost for thousands of years. Many chests, urns, and sarcophagi litter these ancient ruins. What do they contain? Ancient weaponry of unsurpassed value? Armor that offers the protection of the gods? Potions of unparalleled power? Troves of treasure to make him filthy rich? No. None of these.

All I have to say is "CD Projekt! What the Hell?" as Geralt of Rivia picks up a ham sandwich from an ancient tomb and then proceeds to eat it. Why are they there and how does it make sense? Similar culprits are fresh fish, roses and other bizarre items.

Sure, realism isn't needed in games. We play them to escape reality, right? But, common sense is still needed. Developers--use common sense! Don't give us ill-thought and useless "treasures" that don't make sense! And I don't even like ham sandwiches.
