I’m always hearing people complain about how RPGs aren’t as good as they used to be and how Chrono Cross “pwns Baten Kaitos” or whatever. As a kid who is fairly new to RPGs, I usually have no idea what these people are talking about.

Until last month, all I had was an Xbox, PS2, and a Gamecube, no PSX or SNES or anything. Of course, I just happened to accidentally get into RPGs. It all started in November of 2004. I had a fierce addiction to Final Fantasy X and played the crap out of it until my PS2 died on me.

I was having a hard time living without my RPGs, and so I quickly swooped up Fable and Skies of Arcadia. After playing Fable for a long time and starting on Skies of Arcadia, I happened to rent Tales of Symphonia. Needless to say I was hooked.

When my week with my beautiful baby, Tales of Symphonia, was over, I went insane, doing intense research on RPGs. Instantly I knew that I had to get Star Ocean 3. I also found out about Disgaea (I had already owned Fire Emblem and Advanced Wars from a long time ago).

Luck was on my side, as my brother’s friend sold me a PS2 for 15 bucks, and I had just begun a small career as my brother’s babysitter. (25 bucks a week) Like an owl swooping from the moon I scooped up Star Ocean 3, Disgaea, Final Fantasy X-2, and Atelier Iris a few weeks later.

I still wasn’t satisfied, though. Even finally buying Tales of Symphonia wasn’t good enough. I wanted all those old games that people were always talking about! If PS1 RPGs were really so much better than the RPGs of today, then why the heck didn’t I have them? And so, within three weeks, I had Final Fantasy 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and I even borrowed Star Ocean Second Story.

So what did I find? Were the old RPGs gods compared to these ones? Not really. Final Fantasy X is way better than Final Fantasy 7. Star Ocean 3 and Tales of Symphonia are way better than Star Ocean Second Story. And while Final Fantasy 6 was plenty fun and worked well, it just wasn’t very exciting. My favorite of all those old games was Final Fantasy 9, and I suck at it!

So, in the end, I decided to stick with the new games, like Makai Kingdom, La Pucelle, Xenosaga, and Suikoden 3. I still plan to pick up some old games like Chrono Cross and Tales of Destiny, but I still don’t think they’re as great as everyone thinks.
