Josh - 10:18 EST
Another day of work, so...money. Yay.
And, I fortunately made some random friends in my class, so getting the homework done for tomorrow was at least a little less of a pain in my side. I still don't remember their names, though. ^^;
Onward, because I have to wake up early tomorrow! Hoora...I mean, #$^&^@$&!
|
|
|
Yes, yes...let's all take a shot at the Q&A guy. :P
|
Regarding Twilight Princess, Josh said "Since I don't have a GameCube, though...my options are rather limited. I don't really mind, as it will be a good game to play to get used to the novelty of the motion-sensing."
Please explain further, as I fail to understand how the lack of a GameCube would make you options "rather limited".
As I see it they should either be non-existant because you won't have a Wii as well. Or unlimited, since the Wii is backwards compatible with GC games.
Josh
I just knew someone was going to point this out the moment I wrote it. Let me try to dig myself out of this hole, though I'll probably just fail and concede the point.
Clarification time!
1. I will be getting a Wii, so getting a GCN would be redundant and a waste of money.
2. While the Wii does allow for GCN controllers, I'd have to buy another controller. I'm cheap.
3. Ultimately, I will get the Wii version. Because of this, I won't buy the other one. If I have to, I'll steal a friend's copy, without him knowing, under cover of darkness.
And...and...uh...yeah. It happens, I use faulty logic from time to time. In my defense, I had just gotten back from a few rounds with a pitcher or two, since it was a Penn State football weekend. So, you win this round, good sir, but I promise you that you won't win the war!

As for the Nintendo DS, I was having the opposite feelings, wanting more games which only use the stylus because of their control simplicity!
I imagine it's just down to the actual games themselves though. Some work better with a stylus and others with the D-pad & buttons.
(E.g. See those Stylus mini-games on the two Mario DS games. I can't imagine playing those with a D-pad!)
Or maybe it's trying to use both the D-pad (or buttons), together with the stylus which is causing the friction.
On that cut-up voice acting, it doesn't really bother me as much as actual bad voice acting. (Such as that exampled in your column that day.)
Unfortunately I seem to find bad voice acting more common than good acting in RPGs, so perhaps I shouldn't speak as it puts the cut-up one much higher!
Josh
Well, I fully understand that there are games out there that make full use of the stylus, but they do it in a way that you couldn't possibly get the same sort of precision or flexibility as a D-pad. Take Pac-Pix, for example. While I didn't really like the game, I couldn't imagine drawing a Pac-Man using only the D-pad. I also tend to play portable games while holding them in the air, and most of the games I've played that require the stylus + D-pad at the same time have caused me to have to place it on a table or something. It's just not very conducive to my portability requirements.
I dunno...I've heard some pretty decent voice-acting recently. XSIII did a good job for the most part. Actually, the whole trilogy was above-average on the whole. Grandia III suffered some issues, but was ultimately decent, FFX-2 was ok, DQVIII was awesome, and honestly, I can't think of anything that has been atrocious in my library.

Trapped in a clos...never mind.

Josh,
Like you, I know that video gaming isn't everyone's bag, so I definitely keep it to myself as well. It's like almost every other interest/hobby in life, though. I'm from the South, so I love SEC football, but I don't often talk about them when I'm hanging out with my father-in-law, for instance, who's from Detroit and likes the Big Ten.
Josh
Give your father-in-law a hug for me. However, if he's a Michigan fan, please shoot him in the face right afterwards.

I've never truly hidden the fact that I'm a gamer, I guess, but I don't usually have to these days. When I graduated, I moved to Huntsville, AL, which a lot of people usually balk at since 'Bama has quite a reputation, well, for being boring and backwards...among other things. However, living here does have at least one positive...because of all the huge military and Space Program presence in town (Wernher Von Braun and all of that, I'm eventually discovered that I was an engineering gaming geek who lived in a sea of a lot of other engineering/science/math gaming geeks. A lot of these guys, and sometimes gals, have a lot of geeky hobbies; gaming is just one of them. Heck, one of the managers at my job, a 40-something year old retired Marine pilot, used to trade animes with me at work. Even at my church, one of the favorite past times among the guyswas to throw LAN parties on the weekends, but that might have just been the particular group of guys that I hung out with. We often toned it down around people who weren't as excited about gaming. So, at least for the last few years of my life, I haven't had to hide the fact that I'm a gamer. Nearly everyone I know games. Anywhere else, and, well...I probably wouldn't be so open.
Josh
Yeah, for the most part, people know I'm a gamer. I have plenty of friends that are gamers. However, I also have plenty that aren't. When I'm with them, I know talking about games is a useless topic that they don't have much interest in, so I change the subject to something we can both actually have a meaningful relationship about.
I was really referring to 'flaunting' your gamer side. I mean, I know some people that have worn all the stuff you get with collector's editions of games, or just talk non-stop about it. Gaming, to me, is just another hobby, like my playing soccer or writing, or the indiscriminate embarassment of idiots. Am I a gamer? Yes. Am I "Josh, the Gamer?" No.

The down side of living here? The dating scene really sucked. I can not stress that enough, simply because there was a serious lack of single girls living here. That goes with the territory, I guess. I had to outsource another town to find my wife. The effects THAT has had on my gaming time is rather another story, one that most guys go through, I think.
Anyway, I've got to run. Have a good weekend!
Sundoulos
Josh
Really? I would love a nice southern girl. I've had several friends who fit that description, and I'm on the lookout. You know, the classy ones. ^^
But I definitely put aside my gaming when I have a non-gamer girlfriend. I mean, I got my last girlfriend to play Worms, which she loved, but other than that, she was definitely more important. That's a lesson to all you guys out there. Put down the controller and take her to dinner (or cook, if you have the necessary skill)!!

Two roads diverged in a gaming wood. I cast Fire 3 on the left one.

Hey, Josh, you picked up Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria yet? If so, what do
you think? I've been taking quite a while on it, partly to power up and
a few dexterity-related things, but I've been enjoying it!
Also looking forward to the latest in .hack and Final Fantasy. Both are
such radical departures from what came before (or at least in .hack's
case, unknown) that I'm a little nervous. But then, I felt the same
about VP: S, and I've been liking it so far. How apprehensive do you
usually get about the "next step" in a game series you've enjoyed?
Josh
Not yet, unfortunately. I'm actually still plowing through VP:Lenneth on my PSP in my spare time. So far, the staff members who've played it have enjoyed it immensely, just adding to my frustration at having to destroy my backlog and fight homework all at the same time.
I get very apprehensive, but I still welcome the opportunity to see what they've done. One anomaly in a series usually isn't enough to deter my enjoyment, but I will be wary from then on out, because the companies need to learn from any mistakes they've previously made. I'll usually go out and purchase the game (or at least rent it), and I will make an honest effort to enjoy the game. Trust me, I played almost an entire storyline in Unlimited Saga before finally throwing my controller through the TV. I really tried.

Really Ouro. West Coast won by 1 point. And this is AFL not your piddly
backwards throwing "football" (Where there is hardly any kicking). And this
is after Sydney beat West Coast by 1 point in the first round of the finals.
And after the fact that sydney won last years Grand Final by 4 points
against, yep West Coast. If you want true chivalose rivally then these two
teams are they. And at least there not Collingwood
Josh
Piddly backwards! While I love soccer more than I'll ever love football, I'll have you know that...
*grumble*
Oh yeah? Well 90% of your country has a population density of zero! So there! :P

And its nice to know that i'm not the only gamer that works in a restaurant.
Though i'm a dishwasher, i've still had moments where I wish I could leap
out of my enclosed area, dagger and shield (knife and pot lid) weilded and
chased the bloody buggers that decided that 1 minute before closing time was
the time they wanted to order 2 welll done steaks. I have a home to go
people, and I am always at least half an hour finished after the cooks.
Unlike tonight thanks to the boss's friends making there tea "exasperated
sigh".
Josh
I hate those people that call in and say "When do you stop seating," and I have to tell them the truth. Then they walk in at 9:29pm, and demand sustenance. My boss complains about it too, but he still won't let me feed them peat moss, shaped like sushi. I'm positive it would deter them from ever coming back at that time.

Anywho should I talk about games, like the fact that my brother has Kingdom
Hearts 2 at his house (which isn't my house), or the fact that i'll be
getting both Suikoden 5 (This Friday) and Wild Arms 4 (23rd) soon. Or that I
have Pokemon Dungeon Red, and Sammurai Warriors 2 and am playing them both
like mad. Or that i'm going swimmingly at Wild Arms 3. NAH
Bainick's a Pikachu.
Josh
<3 WA3.
I still don't have any of those games, and they're on my wishlist (KHII, Suikoden V, and WA4). Tell me how they go, I'll be looking forward to some positive comments!

So I finally beat my first real boss in Okami, and it was pretty neat. I still say the game is pretty easy, but man is it fun.
Phantasy Star Universe is a real grind-fest so far, and I swear I must be the only person with a working copy of the game for the closed beta, because I can't find a single other person on the game! It's easy to run through the first mission by yourself, but now I'd like to do the other ones, which definitely require having someone else in the party! Yargh.
Oh, and if you're wondering about the items and rune, they'll be up tomorrow. Promise. I also will be adding an archive of all of the trivia questions! I still have a few letters in my inbox, but I'll get them tomorrow, don't worry! ^^
