Been one hell of a busy day today. You'd think that when you get a day off, you would get to...you know, have the day off. But nooooo, I have an enormous paper to write by Monday. Ah well. This is as good enough a time as any to take a break!

As for all of you...you all managed to dodge Roulette...sorta. Lucky punks.

I'm implementing a new rule in THONG. You may not cast Merton more than twice, as this game may take forever. :P

One more: STOP only halts your movement for a day. You will roll for the day after, no extra letter required. (You still need to send the letter to get the normal roll, though).

Hey, Ouro!

Having just completed Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, and wondering what things I missed along the way, an interesting question popped into my head last night. How much of a completionist are you? I know that my sister is so bad that she'll reset a game if she knows she missed a single treasure chest somewhere, and she keeps as many as six or ten save files scattered throughout the game in case she ever needs to return to a moment in particular. Is that over the top? Where do you fall in the scheme of things?

Hehe...I'm a big completionist. Maybe not so extreme that I'd restart a game if I missed a single item, but if I miss something that I -felt- could have been important, I might revert to my last save point. I generally only make one save file (2 if I really want to see, say, a second ending), so if I miss something and overwrite my game, oh well. I'll get it next playthrough.

I think your sister is insane in that regard. Geez. It's one item. Go on GameFAQs and at least see if it was worth it first...sheesh.

Maxim: Ah crap, we missed the chest! We need to go back and get it!

Guy: Dude, the cave collapsed, we can't!

You do realize it is getting harder and harder to write new and engaging letters in, it seems like the same 3 or 4 topics get recycled every month or so(DS vs PSP, which FF game is better/more overated, Sony's increasingly bad business moves etc), occasionally a hot button issue throws everyone into a frenzy of letter-writing, but honestly I feel guilty writing in for no reason other than to attempt to advance my gamepiece so here's my attempt to spice things up

Anyway here's my semi-new topic to add to the growing list, however this is an old topic I asked Matt about awhile back, hopefully this'll spur some good and weird letters

If you were to classify the people(as in police, teachers, doctors, streetpunks, brokenhearted bums, sports players, emo kids etc also for the love of god this is not a racial thing more of an occupation thing) living in modern times under some new funky class system and throw them into an RPG, which groups would be more likely to be heroes, and what kind of skills would those groups have

I think some should be obvious doctors/nurses would have domain over life and healing and status ailments and death etc depending on which side of the good and evil spectrum they chose, I also think regardless of sides brokenhearted bums should attack with badly written/sung songs and broken bottles but I just thought I'd toss that out there

Now for an unrelated question: I personally don't think the cast of DDS falls under transforming characters simply because they don't start as humans and have to do something to morph like other characters do they start out battle already transformed into their Atma, now if they start all battles in human form and had to pull off some special prestiquit(sp?) to transform into Atma then that would make them fall under the category i made up, it would also make the game alot harder, what do you think if anything?

It's getting harder? You're destroying the competition! However, I just had to put that Merton rule into place, so...uh...deal with it. ^^ I don't want this going on forever.

Yeah, we do end up recycling topics, but it's generally unavoidable. Someone remembers something we were discussing long ago, and brings it up so they can put in their two cents. It's a cycle, man! The Cycle of Q&A™!

Well, modern classes? Hm...

  • Emo kids -> Bards. Skills include status inducing effects. The caster gets confused and thinks that he or she suffers from the status effects as well, rendering him or her useless for the rest of eternity.
  • Streetpunks -> Monks. Skills include brass-knuckle fighting. Gains a +2 speed bonus if equipped with a skateboard. Also can confuse the enemy by looking like a total ass.
  • Bums -> Geomancers. Skills include using the surrounding environment for healing effects and damage. If in a suburban area, can use Cardboard Box skill to regain health at a rate of +10% MHP per turn. Uses bell weapon for drinking beer.
  • Police -> Ninjas. Skills include: Can dual-wield a baton and flashlight. Cannot suffer from Silence. May skim off of the top of the party's GP supply.
  • Jocks -> Knights. Skills include the ability to give enemies a swirly, causing Dizzy status effect until dry. Can wear the strongest armor. If Jock trips and falls when no one is around, he complains about being injured and will not fight.

I could go on, but...:P

I (sadly) have not had the pleasure of playing the DDS games, and I desperately want to, 'cause I hear nothing but good things about them. Well, if they are initially human in the story, then I would consider them transforming characters. I don't really know if that applies, but looks good to me. Hehe.

Anyways, Chrono’s theme from Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest emotionally inspiring pieces of music I can think of, especially when you’re listening to it going through the time warp for the first time. It gives you this incredible sense of “Now, it is the beginning of a fantastic journey!” (pat on the back to whoever gets this reference.) Some other favorites of mine include the FF7 boss theme, the music that plays when Cid dies in FF6, and this one piece of music in FF Adventure (the predecessor to Sword of Mana) that plays right before the endgame, after you’ve left Marcy on the Tower and are just about to ride the waterfall up to the place of the final battle. Even though it was only for the Game Boy, it still gave me goosebumps.

Chrono's theme was very exciting. I definitely never have gotten tired of hearing that theme. The FF7 battle theme was...all right in my opinion. I didn't find it epic by any means. Forever Rachel (the song when Cid dies) is a great song, regardless of where it was played in FF6. Back in the heyday of the GameBoy, I never got a chance to play FFA for more than a few moments, unfortunately. It was fun, what I played, though.

Dear Hot Ma..., er, Dear Strong B..., er, Hey you,

So you finally got a PSP? First off, happy birthday. Second, tell your parents you would have rather had cash. Ok, just kidding, but I still find it hard to justify getting a PSP. Yeah LocoRoco looks really fun and MGS Portable Ops does as well, but it still just has a crap fest of RPGs. Not to hate on the PSP or anything, but I had such high expectations for the RPGs that could have reached us, yet no. Nothing. Nadda. Let's Count Sand. Remake IV. YAY!

So, what RPGs or RPG series would you like to see on the PSP? Right now the DS is kicking its tail majorly, so it needs something to refresh it. It is up to you to decide.

On your topic of discussion, has the music in a game ever moved me? Yes. I'm not afraid to say that music in general can cause very emotional responses for me, so if a moment is touching and the music draws that out, then of course it will have an effect on me. The classic Aeris vs. Sephi scene is a no brainer. If you have not played through FFX, then stop right now, go out, buy the game, and don't return until you have because this would be a bit of a spoiler for you. The one scene that gets me more than anything is the ending of FFX with Tidus and Yuna's hug. I can listen to the Ending Theme all by itself and get emotional, but the part where Yuna runs toward Tidus and falls with the music added to it is just really wonderful. I love RPG music that sets a mood like that.

Well, I didn't ask for the PSP...I just kinda got it. So, I figure I might as well make use of it. I've destroyed Lumines and Katamari, so I picked up Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max since I loved it on PS2. Now, who the hell is Ingrid, because she destroyed me several times before I finally beat her?

A series? Well, FF is a no brainer. I'd really like Suikoden to come out for this. If they made BoF:DQ for this thing, I think I'd never leave it anywhere. I'm just happy at the potential for the Tales games to come to it, and I can't wait for Valkyrie Profile to grace us with its presence. The PSP is seriously lacking with good RPGs, so...either they had better get working on it, or start cranking out good remakes (I'd prefer the former...).

The hug at the end of FFX was a great scene. Even though Yuna's voice acting was terrible, that was an incredibly emotionally charged scene, regardless of who you are. Square has always had a trend of producing exceptional music for its games, and I get excited every time they announce a new game, if only for the music.



I swear, I almost felt like I was playing Virtual Skeeball!


Hey Ouro. What RPG actions (apart from Harvest Moon and Zelda type ones) do you think the Wii remote will be able to use. Ohh imagine Baulders Gate 2 on the Wii. Yay

Imagine a game like Morrowind/Oblivion on the Wii. If you could control all of those movements through the Wii's controller...I think I would actually have a reason to waste my time on those games. Lockpicking, sword fighting, punching someone right in the teeth...yeah. At least it will give those kids who exhibit violent behavior an outlet. Thin air. That's what I'm talking about. ^^

If you want to join: Please send me your top 3 choices for characters for your game piece. A list of them that can be used can be found here. Please only choose from the "PARTY" or "NPC" links. Also make sure that the character has a left/right-facing sprite, and a front/back facing sprite. Thanks!

  • Everyone begins the game on START.
  • For every letter you write in, I will roll a 3-sided die (I'll use RPGamer's resident Random Number Generator, DiceyBot). That will determine how many spaces you move.
  • You may only get credit for one letter, per day - max 3 per weekend. Timestamps will be checked, and only letters sent during Friday - Monday before my column will be counted towards that weekend. Letters sent at other times during the week will not count until Saturday.
  • Letters must be addressed to me, at either qna@rpgamer.com or ourobolus@rpgamer.com. Letters will get credit even if they are unanswered, or even if Matt answers them.
  • If you land on a Spell Tile, you MUST use the spell listed on the Tile. Spells and their effects are listed after the rules.
  • The Trivia Tile MUST be landed on before you may enter the FINISH Tile. Answering the trivia question correctly will automatically grant you entry into the FINISH Tile, and you will receive the prize.
  • If you reach the Trivia Tile, another reader who is participating in the game will ask you a question. However, the person who lands on the Tile decides WHICH reader asks the question, as well as WHICH RPG from which the question will be asked (e.g. "Wonderslime wants Bainick to ask him a question about Chrono Trigger").
  • If the person who provides the question has not played the game, they may use anything necessary to come up with a question. Failure to provide a question over 2 days of my column will result in the same effect as if the receiver answered the question right, and he/she will progress to the FINISH Tile.
  • The Prize for this initial board will be 5 Guest Hosting positions. Once those are completed, a new board will be created, probably with more prizes.
  • The effects will go as such. Movement->Spells Cast->Effects. Everyone will move at the same time, all spells will be cast at the same time, and all effects will happen at the same time. Attack spells will be cast at the beginning of the day after they were landed on. Spells are cast only if the character is on the space at the -end- of the day.

Spell effects are as follows:

  • Bolt 1: Player chooses another player to push back 1 tile.
  • Bolt 2: Player chooses another player to push back 2 tiles.
  • Stop: The next time Player sends in a letter, it will take 2 days for the roll to take place.
  • Haste: Player receives an extra roll which will make him/her advance 1-3 tiles.
  • Slow: Player receives an extra roll which will make him/her retreat 1-3 tiles.
  • Merton: Player chooses another player to push back 4 tiles, at the cost of Player moving back 2 tiles. Can only be used twice.
  • Roulette: I roll a 20-sided die. Any players standing on that numbered tile are pushed back 2 tiles.
