Out With the Old, in With the Drew

Late update today, I wanted to wait until I was at the peak of my intelligence and wit to bring you readers the best darn column possible. Okay, okay, so I was out goofing around with my friends, sue me ;)

Anyway, I'll be your Ask guy for all your weekend needs. Contrary to a rumor that somehow got started, I have but one cranium. Sorry to dissapoint you big multi-head fans out there. But enough of my babbling, let's get on to what you really came here for.
It's a Secret to Everybody
Howdy. Will you please answer some FFVII-related questions?

1) Whats the difference between the "Added effect" materia and the "Elemental" materia? Is it the same thing?
The Added Effect Materia adds the effect of an equipped materia to your weapon. For example, if you put the Added Effect materia linked to a Fire materia on your weapon, occasionally when you attack fire will also be cast on the foe. The Elemental materia adds the powers of an elemtal materia like Ice or Fire to your weapon or armor. If you link Ice and Elemental together on your armor, you will not be damaged by ice attacks.
2) I got this item in the Gold Saucer, which was described as a "perfect copy of Sephiroth's sword". Another useless item?
Yeah, it's just for fun, nothing special about it.
3) What about the "Super Sweeper"?
Okay, I even went as far as to borrow Thor's "Summoning Elder Gods for Dummies" to help me out on this one. And, well, nadda. Nobody knows what the hell those things do. Of course, I'm sure by tomorrow I'll have received a myriad of e-mails informing me of the trite effects/benefits it has, so just look at Thoughtlets tomorrow :)
4) How in the name of Leviathan can you make the fat good-for-nothing mog in the Wonder Square fly?
You slip him a few of Mario's magic mushrooms. He'll be flyin' high as a kite in no time.

Rippin' it Up
Drew,

This isn't exactly a gameplay question, or a rant, or flattery, or any of the other letters you're probably getting, but I'm not sure who else to ask. You're supposed to be omniscient, right?

Anyhow, I was wondering just how people rip these movies from PSX CDs. I mean, it's obviously possible, seeing as how RPGamer has loads of anime and FMV movies from several RPGs. Exactly how is this done? Is there some kind of special equipment needed? Can any old Joe Schmoe do it on his PC? Thanks a lot for any answers you have. I've been wanting to rip several movies from games I have, but I haven't figured out how.

-Matt Blackie
We just use a standard video capture card to snag the video straight from our PSX's, then use Quicktime and a few other programs to change it into the formats we plan on using, namely Quicktime 3.

Set Your Sights on Over
Hey Drew (since Thor's gotta make an obvious oversight just before he takes the weekend off)

I've thought of two reasons why Square would even bother releasing FFVI by itself. One, FFIV and FFV already came out. Some people have probably bought both of those for PSX. So why spend $20 bucks more to get two games you already have twice? Also, some people just might not like (gasp) FFIV and FFV so they only want FFVI. Of course I don't think FFVI will do as well and FFC but I'm sure there was a very small group of people, who are glad that Square's releasing it by itself as well.

-Eric
Yup, good point. Although, if you want to be really, really picky, the FFC versions of FFIV and FFV do have a few more FMV scenes in them.

You Are Correct, Sir
Well, Thor commented today that the FF movie clip that's been going around is in Japanese "just because Square is, all things considering, still a Japanese company, so they decided not to go with English."

Actually, its in Japanese because it was taped off Japanese TV. Looks to me like it's from an entertainment news program (i.e. "Entertainment Tonight.") Besides, its complete with cheesy Japanese journalist gushing ("Let's all wait with great anticipation!", etc. etc.) Seems Square just made the footage available and no one over here thought we'd be interested. -_^

- Charlie Tangora
Yup, that makes sense to me. Thor must have thought that the letter meant the actual footage showed characters speaking in Japanese, which really is what the letter makes it sound like.

What Have I Been Smoking?
Drew,

This may come as a shock to most people, but not everyone is just "ooh"-ing and "aah"-ing over the Playstation 2 specs and video demos. In fact, I may be the only person with a negative opinion about it.

Now, the specs and video demos of the system look incredible; don't get me wrong. However, here's my problem: they're TOO good. Yes, you read that right. What do I mean by that?

Here's how the order of things will go. Sony releases the PSX2. All of a sudden, people will be flocking to this new, incredible system with monster graphics capabilities. Thus, the other companies, with what they have, will be left in the dust. While they will try to get new chipsets out in time, they'll go bankrupt, since only a small number of people are supporting their "old" systems anymore (remember how the NES managed to last a good four years after the SNES came out? And how the SNES died in '97, a mere year after the N64 came out? This will be even quicker ditching). So, Nintendo and Sega get pushed far out of the market. But it doesn't end there.

Now, since people are expecting monster graphics, development time will increase exponentially to put these in. Oh, sure, there will be tons of sloppy crap released, but the good games are going to be heavily delayed. People will get impatient, and more horrid things will happen. Eventually, Sony has destroyed the videogame market. Nobody will care, except for those who followed the Super NES all the way to the end, the last good game being Harvest Moon.

Okay, this is the worst case scenario, but it sounds frighteningly real, doesn't it? The only thing that I can hope for is that Sony will keep a huge price on the machine until the rest of the market catches up. But Sony literally has the weapon to destroy videogames as we know it.

Just for the record, I am NOT anti-Sony. I have a Playstation, and I love it (I'm getting Silent Hill and Xenogears later this month). I also own an N64 and am thinking of getting a Saturn (just for the kick-ass games we know were released, a.k.a. Shining Force III, Panzer Dragoon Saga...). But Sony has a monster, and they should hold out until the other companies have got a chance to almost, but not quite, reach to where this system is at. Otherwise, bye-bye, videogames...

You're a commie, go back to your red country where viewpoints like that are welcome! That's right, just pick up your hammer and sickle and get on out of here, I've got my eye on you.

Hehehe... just kiddin' with you. Anyway, you do make a valid point there, but you have to keep in mind that the majority of gamers are casual gamers who are perfectly content with their current systems and will wait to see what Nintendo comes out with before making up their minds, and most hardcore gamers will get all 3 systems (The Dreamcast, the PS2, and Nintendo's currently secret project).

My Pet Demon
Jack Nicholson has a demon, do you?
Yes, I have a demon familiar who hovers about my head casting Lightening Sphere on random pedestrians.

Drew Stuff

First off, a whole buncha people wrote in to say that Luck effects how often you get a critical hit and it also helps you evade attacks. Thanks, buncha people!

Well, looks like I'm back in the Q and A saddle again. I hope to entertain you to the point where you say, wow, I'm entertained. Oh don't look at me like that! Like you can always think of something witty and insightful to say.
