Updater on Duty:Justin Weiss

What is the secret of your power? I may not be able to kill a yak from 200 yards away with mind bullets, but I can certainly bring you fresh roundtables bi-weekly. It's not telekinesis, but it's not half bad. Our roundtable this week has concentrates more on current events in the RPG world than previous roundtables have. We discussed the new games that Square is releasing for Nintendo's systems, which provided some tension between the optimists and the pessimists on our panel.

In our next topic, our panel talked about the potential of the connectivity between Nintendo's Game Boy Advance and GameCube. This is something that really piqued my curiosity at E3, and though I didn't get a chance to talk about the technology that I thought provided the greatest opportunity to game developers using this connectivity, I did get a chance to discuss it with our Q&A slime, Googleshng, later on. You can check out that log here.

Finally, we argued the classic "realistic graphics vs. stylized graphics" issue, a topic re-introduced in RPGamer's interview with Square artist Yoshitaka Amano. This provided for some heated discussion between the two camps, although it eventually resulted in a debate over whether or not garage developers could exist in this big-budget age of game creation. That, however, is a topic for another roundtable.

We're still open to applications to sit on our roundtable and talk about games with your favorite staff members of RPGamer; the link is on the sidebar to the right. Suggestions, comments, possible discussion topics, and anything else you feel like throwing my way are always welcome, and should be sent to rtable@rpgamer.com. Have a good week, and keep reading!

Topics of Discussion

The opinions expressed in the following topics are the opinions of these five staff members (and one reader) and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of RPGamer as a whole, nor the RPGamer staff members not participating in the roundtable.

What do you think of Square's recent GBA announcement?
Seiken Densetsu, a new Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Most RPGamers could ask for nothing more, but how will the games really turn out?
How can RPGs make the most of GBA-GC connectivity?
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicle will utilize the connectivity features between the Game Boy Advance and the GameCube. How can it, and future RPGs, make the most of this technology?
Do you prefer stylized or realistic graphics?
Exploding in the wake of the Zelda footage released almost a year ago, this issue is one that always provides heated discussion, and this time proved no different.
