Title Goes Here

October 4th, 2002
Updater on Duty:Justin Weiss

It's been a while, hasn't it? Well, I blame it on school getting underway. There's really nothing like three straight weeks of exams and machine projects less than a third of the way into the semester... go engineering! Maybe I'll switch majors to leisure studies or something. Our guest panelists for this roundtable were Pierce Wilkinson and Mike Harnest, Pierce being our reader panelist and Mike being a former RPGamer newsie who just happened to be around for the occasion. Special thanks to them, and to RPGamer staffer Doug Hill and reader Kenji Kotaro for the topics used.

We covered a wide range of topics in this roundtable, from the current discussion of Final Fantasy XI's expected success and the success of PS2 online RPGs in general to an argument over which stat/experience system worked the best and improvements to come up with a near-perfect system. Finally, we discussed the addition of required and optional mini-games in the genre and how they should be handled to promote smooth, frustration-free gameplay. All three provoked interesting conversation, and some good points were made. Again, if you have any comments or questions about anything discussed today, send an email to me at rtable@rpgamer.com, and I'll get back to you ASAP.

We're always open to applications to sit on our roundtable and talk about games with your favorite staff members of RPGamer; the link is on the sidebar to the right. Suggestions, comments, possible discussion topics, and anything else you feel like throwing my way are always welcome, and should be sent to rtable@rpgamer.com. Have a good week, and keep reading!

Topics of Discussion

The opinions expressed in the following topics are the opinions of these five staff members and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of RPGamer as a whole, nor the RPGamer staff members not participating in the roundtable.

What chance of success do PlayStation 2 online RPGs have?
The online RPGs announced for the PlayStation 2 have several things working against them, such as price and peripherals. Can they overcome this with quality?
Which is the best skill/magic learning system?
From the levels to the Sphere Grid, every RPG seems to have a different way of learning skills. Which is the best, and could it be made better?
Where do mini-games fit into RPGs?
Mini-games have become a recent staple of RPGs, but are they fun diversions or just annoying breaks in the story?
