Peter Molyneux Shows Fable to RPGamer - Page Four

The hero then picked a fight with one of the patrons at the bar. The guy quickly fought back, and within a few seconds all of the men around the hero were in a brawl. The fight between one of the guys and the hero went outside, where the hero drew his sword and killed the man. Molyneux said that fist fighting is acceptable, yet killing the man with a sword would have a definite effect on the hero's good-evil alignment.

Yet another aspect that was delved into was having a family. You can court women and, if you choose, can also marry and have children. The hero had a wife in town, yet had not been home in a while. Upon going inside, his disgruntled wife made quite a fuss. The hero, having no other real response, took advantage of the belching skill he had acquired from the bar. His wife stopped talking and left, disgusted. Molyneux stated that the hero could take quite time off from his quest to raise a family, but would eventually return. In news that is sure to delight philanderers everywhere, he also stated that you could conceivably have a wife in each town in the game.

While Fable is obviously a gameplay tour de force, it's quite a looker as well. Carter took some time to show off the graphics of the game, which are quite impressive. The camera switched from the hero to free-floating, and roamed around the town, which was still alive as ever. A view of the rooftops showed impressive details that will only be seen by a fraction of players. A quick peek in the inn window showed that the bar room brawl, instigated many minutes earlier, was still going on.

Despite the openness of gameplay and the ability to waver between good and evil, the game has a singular core storyline. At the beginning of the game, your family is killed, which opens your journey. While many quests can be taken, at certain points the game's plot will be advanced, and there will be a definite ending as well. The character can grow from fifteen to as old as forty-four, Molyneux's age, but the hero's age will not directly affect the game's plot.

Molyneux then went on to talk about a few more of the quests that can be taken, most of which tend to affect the alignment of your character. One such quest requires you to protect a man who has found a number of gems, while the other choice has you help some bandits who are robbing a man who has found a number of gems. The decision has a clear effect on your good-evil alignment, although it was not mentioned whether the hero could take one mission then change his mind during the mission and switch sides. It is also possible to remain neutral, depending upon your actions and reactions.
