Submitting a Review

The Fan Material section is your place to share the characters, classes, prestige classes, skills and abilities, vehicles, equipment, spells, adventures, and anything else you've created for tabletop games, including even character sheets.

  • Separate submissions, please

Due to the way I organize incoming submissions, please keep individual submissions separate. If you are placing your submissions in the email itself, then please send only one submission in each message. If you are sending submissions in attachments (text format is preferred), then please place each submission in individual attachments. Separate emails are still preferred when using attachments.

  • Let me know how you wish to be credited.

Give me the name, nickname, or alias you want me to use to credit you for your submission, and if you want me to link to one of your e-mail addresses. I hope it is obvious that I will not use any profane or obscene nickname or alias, and thus, this will also delay the publishing of your submission. Generally, if you do not specify how you want to be credit, I'll typically use whatever you sign off with or your email username. I only link to an email when requested to.

  • Be specific about what your review is for.

In particular, make it clear whether you are reviewing an entire game or just one book or set that is part of that game. Don't assume I'm familiar with it, either; let me know what that book or set is. Is it a sourcebook of some sort? Is it an adventure? Is it some sort of rules expansion? Be specific. In fact, this would be a good introduction for your review, so this is the best place to include this information.

  • Make sure you understand the scoring system.

Reviews require scores for the relevant categories and an overall score before they can be accepted. Review scores are explained in detail on this page. It's up to you to determine a score for each relevant category and also to decide on an overall score for the game. The overall score should not be a simple average, but reflect your overall opinion of the game or item you are reviewing.

  • For tabletop RPGs, please review only if you have been a player and a gamemaster.

A proper review of a tabletop RPG should be based on experience from both perspectives.

  • Also, don't review anything you haven't made much use of.

Generally, if you haven't used what you wish to review in actual gaming, you shouldn't review it. It is preferable that you have used an item, whether it be sourcebook or adventure, enough to be pretty familiar with it. For a sourcebook, that means you've used a substantial or meaningful portion of the material within. For an adventure, you should either have gamemastered with it or been a player in it at least once.

  • Be as complete as possible.

It is recommended that you use the scoring categories as a rough guide of what you should cover in the text of your review. That will help you cover everything a good review needs to cover.

  • Please proof all submissions first.

I will almost certainly look over your submissions myself, and I have no problem with correcting minor issues. If you have errors which require significant rewording to correct, or if I am not certain what you are getting at, I will generally ask you to correct said errors and resubmit. I'd rather do that than take the chance of misinterpreting something or otherwise improperly editing your submissions.

Submissions generally will not be rejected due to minor grammar or spelling errors, but extremely bad spelling or grammar may result in a request for a rewrite. If the errors can be fixed without resorting to a rewrite, I will usually do so myself, but it is always best to proof yourself, as I do miss errors sometimes.

  • Review templates are now available.

If you're comfortable working with HTML files, you can download the proper template for the category of your submission. The templates contain HTML code, but are in .txt format. When using the templates, please submit as plain text attachments. This is due to server-side includes used by RPGamer; providing the templates as .html files would create certain problems.
