In the third chapter of the Rise of the Runelords adventure path,
the player characters are tasked with discovering the fate of a distant fort that has
failed to report in a timely manner. Along the way, the players discover a traitor,
a city being prepared for a mass sacrifice, and more hints about the greater threat
posed to Varisia.
The Hook Mountain Massacre adventure provides the player characters with the
opportunity to seize a fortress for their own use. To supplement this, one of
the accompanying articles details the pros and cons of owning and running a keep. This
article is useful in more than just this adventure, providing guidelines that can
be used anytime the players come into possession of a keep.
A Game Master reading through the adventure for the first time might be intrigued
by the deformed ogres that are so prominent throughout the adventure; perhaps even to the point of wanting to use them in other games. Thankfully,
the template for creating Ogrekin is included with the adventure, making importing
these deformed monstrosities into other adventures a snap.
As always, the book includes a gazetteer entry--this one covering the various peoples,
governments, and important features of the continent of Varisia. Another entry is
provided in the Pathfinders Journal, showing the seedier side of Eando Kline. This
chapter's bestiary includes six new monsters from the twisted mind of fan-favorite
Nicolas Logue, destined to see the light of day (or night) in many adventures and
campaigns.
The Hook Mountain Massacre continues to meet the expectations of readers
set by the first two chapters of the Rise of the Runelords adventure path
with strong storytelling, excellent support materials, and dangerous monsters. The
few weak points in the adventure path seem to be steadily ironed out as the
chapters roll out, making this new product series from Paizo Publishing a must-have
adventure for gamers everwhere.
