Astral Travels
featured on Nov. 1, 2006 contributed by Matt "RedBeastMage" Foster

I was running a game for my usual group of friends, and they were in search of some githyanki bandits who had stolen a rather vital item from them. After some quick detective work, they found that the githyanki they were searching for had fled the material plane and were on route back to their home on the Astral Plane. Despite a general lack of experience in the field of planar travel, the band of player characters decided they had no choice but to follow after the bandits immediately.

This group, comprised of a monk, rogue, barbarian and sorcerer, found themselves in a heap of trouble upon landing in the Astral Plane. They weren't prepared for the lack of traditional gravity and timeless nature of the plane. Not only that, but they landed themselves in the middle of a skirmish between the bandits they were searching for and a rather belligerent wizard only minutes after entering the plane. They approached the scene with great care, as they watched the wizard make short work of the githyanki that had previously given them such difficulties back home. Fearing they might be the next victims of the wizard's wrath, the barbarian came up with a quick solution: play dead. Reluctantly, the group agreed to try it, as they had no other easily available options.

Which ending is the real one?

A.

The group all begin to play dead, and the wizard came over to inspect them. As he moved towards them, he called to them to stop playing around, as he could see clearly through the ruse. The player characters rose up and confronted the wizard. He told them that he was attacked by the foolish githyanki and was simply defending himself in response. After learning that they were looking for those specific bandits, the wizard mentioned that he didn’t see them carrying the item they were looking for. He believed they passed the item along to another crew that was on its way back to the githyanki capitol.

B.

The group all began to play dead. The wizard comes over to check out the bodies, unsure of how they came to be here. Distracted by thoughts of the battle he just fought and the seemingly random appearance of the dead party, he carelessly begins to inspect the monk. The barbarian, realizing the wizard is distracted, hops to his feet and unleashes a brutal slash on the wizard, completely severing his head from the rest of his body. When the group asked why, the barbarian simply replied, "I thought he was going to rob us and then dispose of the bodies."
