Radiant Historia

This week's edition of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has published information about Radiant Historia, a new RPG being developed by Atlus for the Nintendo DS. This game features the ability to bend space and time in addition to regular turn-based RPG action.

While the game bears no relation to the similarly titled Radiata Stories, developed by Tri-Ace and published by Square Enix in 2005, there are a few members of the Radiata Stories development team who have returned to lend their talents to this game. This includes Satoshi Takayashiki, who is credited with coming up with the concept for Radiata Stories and Hiroshi Konishi, returning as character designer.

In addition, Famitsu has revealed information about Radiant Historia's storyline, characters and battle system. The story starts with the main character, Stok, and his two subordinates Renny and Marko being given a mission to rescue an agent from a hostile foreign country. When the mission goes south and Stok is seriously injured, he wakes up in Historia, a place where space and time have become badly warped. Historia's mysterious residents grant Stok the ability to travel through time and space. Even without this ability, Stok still has a large world to explore.

The battle system uses a turn-based battle system with a 3x3 grid, with the ability for multiple characters or enemies to occupy the same square. A timeline shown on the top screen will show which characters are next to act in turn, allowing the player to strategize and create opportunities for combo attacks.

Radiant Historia is currently scheduled for a November 4th release date in Japan. An English translation has not yet been announced.
