IGN recently got a sneak peek of Rise of the Argonauts, an action RPG in development for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. As the name suggests, the game is set in ancient Greece and draws inspiration from the myth of Jason and the Argonauts (the band of heroes that joins him on his ship, the Argo). The game does not follow the myth precisely, but uses elements to tell its own unique tale. In Rise of the Argonauts, Jason seeks the Golden Fleece in order to resurrect his bride who was murdered on the day they were married.

Though Jason is the game's protagonist, he will have several companions, each with unique strengths and abilities. For every quest the player will need to choose which two Argonauts will join Jason's party. Thus far, Hercules, Atalanta, Achilles, and Odysseus are confirmed as playable characters, though others will likely join the ranks in the final version of the game. The journey will take players to fifteen islands and the Argo will serve as a home base throughout. As players complete quests on these islands they will be able to unlock prizes which will both add to the decor of the Argo and give the players practical abilities. For example, NPCs such as priests or blacksmiths will join the crew and provide upgrades.

Combat will take place in real time with cinematic visuals. The effect of attacks is made obvious in the game. All enemies, whether bosses or regular foes, will be specially animated to react to attacks and will receive wounds. Gashes will appear on enemy hides for every strike of the player's blade. Combat will be continuous so there will be no need to switch to a menu screen for weapon changes or healing, though it's not yet clear how this will be implemented. It has also been hinted that there will be online and offline multiplayer options.

Since no Greek myth is complete without Greek gods, several of them make appearances in the game. Apollo, Athena, Ares, and Hermes will act as benefactors and carrying out tasks for these gods will affect your characters' development. Character designs are still in the development stage, but the game seems to be aiming for a lush visual style that draws inspiration from Greek myth, but which also represents a huge departure from it with the inclusion of a more fantasy-esque style.

Rise of the Argonauts still has a ways to go as it is set for a 2008 release. Keep an eye on RPGamer for further details as they become available.
