WonderSwan Boarded by Pirates
One Piece

Looking at Nintendo's success in the handheld market, you could be forgiven for thinking that there just aren't any competitors. Well, there are, one of which is the Japan-only WonderSwan Color. There have been a number of quality games that have appeared on Bandai's handheld console, and now we bring you information on another interesting title, One Piece.

Based on a highly successful Japanese manga series, One Piece tells the tale of a teen named Rufi whose ambition in life is to become the Pirate King. The game is set up, not with you taking the role of the protagonist, but rather as an outsider who joins up with Luefy, Shanks and the rest of their pirating gang. As it's classified as a communication RPG, you can count on doing a lot of reading. Not that it's all cerebral, mind you. The game, which makes use of the omnipresent three person-party, supplements the story aspects with an interesting, combo-based battle system. For an idea of what the game looks like in action and a glimpse of some of the characters, check out the screens and artwork posted yesterday.

As incentive, retailers are offering a large One Piece pirate flag as a gewgaw upon pre-ordering, though that might be a moot point, considering that the game hits stores in Japan tomorrow, September 13. With a price tag of 4,500 ¥ ($38) and an interesting premise, One Piece might just prove to be a worthwhile addition for importers.
