Hot on the heels of the company's recently released MMORPG, Anarchy Online, Swiss publisher and developer Funcom has announced the first details for its next online game, Midgard, and has launched an official website for the project. The title is currently being tooled over at the developer's Norwegian studios.

Based, as the title would suggest, a millennium ago, in the time of Vikings, Midgard promises to fully encapsulate the ambiance of this fascinating era. The game was shown behind closed doors at E3 this past May. In the press release, Game Director, Ragnar Tørnquist, states that, "We're creating an incredibly detailed and believable world reflecting the history and myths of the ancient Norse, without sacrificing game-play for the sake of realism. Our vision with Midgard has always been 'low threshold, great depth'. There is room for everyone in this world with both veteran gamers and new players finding much to enjoy."

Funcom is looking to bring a little innovation into the genre with Midgard, by creating a fully functional virtual society where even seemingly meaningless occupations are important. It looks to combine the best of the single- and multiplayer experiences from various genres, from RPGs to "Sim"-type construction games.
