Confused? RPGamer has been receiving conflicting reports as to the legitimacy of the claim that Final Fantasy Tactics is going to be re-released as a Greatest Hits title. Previous reports indicated that this was indeed the case, and that the game was scheduled to arrive sometime in July. Now, we have received word from a source at Sony that they have no knowledge of this.

The game is in great demand, with fans clamoring for some tactical Final Fantasy goodness having to resort to the gougers on eBay for a copy. With the game going for up to $150 at the auction site, it's understandable that there was a collective sigh of relief - unless you're one of the gougers, that is - when it was made known that the title would be re-released under the Greatest Hits line-up. With this new information, it seems that, for now, the only way to get a hold of this classic game is to take your chances online.

UPDATE (07/20/2001) : Square confirmed with RPGamer today that Sony is in fact bringing Final Fantasy Tactics back as a Greatest Hits title. Why the confusion and conflicting sources? Who knows, but the game and official strategy guide should be in stores by the 31st of July. Keep an eye out for me. I'll be the tall guy with his mouth full of crow.
