Koei Tecmo recently revealed more details about Toukiden 2, focusing on the game's story and few more characters, as well as announcing a new release date for the game in Japan and providing various bits of new media that are viewable below. Originally planned for June 30, 2016, the game will now be released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita on July 28, 2016. A PlayStation Vita version for the game is now also available to download from the Japanese PlayStation Store, joining the previously-released PlayStation 4 demo that has been updated with bug fixes and Cross-Play support with the Vita demo.

The game is set in Meiji era of Japan (1868-1912 AD), though this version of the world has been vastly changed by the Awakening that has effectively caused history to shatter. Large creatures known as Oni appeared in the north, swiftly advancing south and overrunning human settlements. The warriors that fought back against the Oni — Slayers — decided to make at stand at Yokohama. During this stand a huge Oni descended and a mysterious gate swallowed up a single Slayer.

Toukiden 2 takes place ten years after this incident, where the player character — a Slayer suffering from memory loss — washes up on the shore of Mahoroba Village and joins the group of Slayers based there. Touya is the commanding officer of the group, who managed to form a powerful military force during his wanderings prior to the game's event. He is a revolutionary at heart and harbours a dislike for Yakumo. Manadzuru is Touya's second-in-command and Kamuna's older sister. She is known for being a strict disciplinarian, though likes cure animals. The company also showed off two new types of Oni: the Daibatachi, which has a blade on its tail, and the Guhin, which has a fan on its tail that can create wind and thunder attacks.

Toukiden 2 is a follow-up to the PlayStation Vita's Toukiden: The Age of Demons and its enhanced release for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, Toukiden Kiwami. The game eschews its predecessor's mission-based structure in favour of an open-world approach. It has not yet been announced for a western release.
